Poncho Sweater

crosette

Question

I'm working on EmeraldMoon's poncho sweater patter in size 4/5. At round 17 where you start on the armholes it's looking a little funny.

Rnd 17: slip stitch to center of shell, Ch 2, dc, ch 1, 2dc in ch 1 sp.** ch 1, 2dc in next ch 1 sp ** repeat till after you have done 8- 1/2 shells Now

skip 13 shells(armhole) 2dc,ch 1 in next ch 1 sp into the 14th space after you have skipped the 13-1/2 shells repeat to center shell, do full shell again** Repeat from** to last shell, join..

First, where it says:

skip 13 shells(armhole) 2dc,ch 1 in next ch 1 sp into the 14th space after you have skipped the 13-1/2 shells

If I skip 13 shells then I should be working in the 13th space and not the 14th space...right? Because if I work into the 14th space then I'll have skipped 14 shells.

Ok, then where it says:

repeat to center shell, do full shell again** Repeat from** to last shell, join..

If I repeat from ** then I'm supposed to do 8 1/2shells after the full shell but on the other side (before the full shell) I have 11 1/2shells. So I just did 11 1/2shells and then did the other armhole and then worked to the last full shell. But now the front is different from the back and it doesn't lay flat. The back has 8 1/2shells on either side of the full shell and the front has 11 1/2shells on either side of the full shell. Is this right?

:think I'm pretty confused.

Hi,

Is it possible for you to post a picture of the poncho....It was :(pretty hard to follow your explanation but then again I may have adult ADHD ;)....seriously If they tell you to skip 13 shells (stitches) then you are making your next stitch in the 14th space....see if doing this gives you the correct 8 1/2 shells on both sides....sounds like you might have too many stitches around ... do you have the correct number of stiches on the row before this?

The pattern I'm using is here.

If they tell you to skip 13 shells (stitches) then you are making your next stitch in the 14th space

If I skip 13 halfshells then I'm working in the 13th space not the 14th. If I work in the 14th space then I'll have skipped 14 halfshells not 13. So anyway, I tried doing it by skipping 14 and just working into the 14th space and it still doesn't come out right either. This way I have 10 halfshells on either side of the fullshell in the front and 8 halfshells on either side of the fullshell in the back. So it still doesn't lay flat.

I'm not sure but I think I do have the correct number of stitches on the row before the armhole section. The last stitch count in the pattern is given after round 4. I have the correct amount after round 4. I believe each round increases the number of halfshells on either side of the fullshell by one. At the end of round 16 I have 30 halfshells on either side of the fullshell. So in total I have 60 halfshells and 2 fullshells. Does anyone know if that's how many I'm supposed to have?

I really want to finish this...somebody help!! :eek

Count the 1ch spaces and divide them in half, work out how many you can have for each armhole, mark the spaces with a little safety pin, (lay it flat on the floor, matching your shaping front and back, and make sure it all sits OK) and do your pattern over the rest.

It is such a cute idea. I might try it.

I am making some Peggy Squares into childrens ponchos so it might work with those. Will let you know if it does.

PM me if you need to.

Have fun.

Thanks, Aggie May. I'm too frustrated to even look at it right now (I've frogged and redone it soo many times) but I'll try what you said when it doesn't bother me as much anymore. Thanks again. I do appreciate you trying to help. :D
