Pet blankies for adoption center - CAL

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

just dropped off some food my kitty wouldn't touch, and am going to be crocheting/collecting crocheted (or knitted:blush :eek- taboo- I know! ) blankies to go in cages or pet baskets for beds as well as any other pet items. These will go to Project Hope in Metropolis IL, a no-kill shelter. (Project Hope is where I adopted my Angel; fiancee's granma's cat we inherited came from there too. will post the petfinder/shelter link as soon as I find it) Otherwise the animals sometimes sit on a hard metal wire cage floor for as long as they are there. If anyone would like to send some to donate please pm me for either my address or the shelter's. I can drop them at my local PetSmart on the way to/from breakfast in the mornings :D - they house kitties for Project Hope to adopt out.

I'm making a CAL out of this too as soon as I get a simple pattern posted I made up for kitties- small doggies blankies. *Ugly* scrap yarn (or pretty- your choice) works great for this as the doggies and kitties don't care what color it is- just so it is soft and comfortable. You can use any pattern- the more solid the better but definitely not a requirement.

Any crocheted toys are OK too as long as they don't have removable (or that the pets can chew off) parts etc. Please be sure to sew any ends in so they don't chew the yarn tails off!

Hi Marla,

I love to crochet for the animal shelters. We do actually have a generic CAL that fits for this - Crochet Along ... little blankies. Mine is the animal snuggles. I'm sure if you wanted to make one specificly for your charity, that would work too. Very good work that you are doing!:clap

I've been thinking about doing this for Lollypop Farm here in Rochester, but I'm not sure how big to make them... suggested dimensions?

http://www.lollypop.org

The Snuggles Project (Hugs for Homeless Animals) lists suggested dimensions and a lot of other info: http://www.h4ha.org/snuggles/ . The way the Snuggles Project works is that you make the snuggles and donate them locally, but you can fill out a form showing that they come from someone participating in The Snuggles Project. :c9

They have a worldwide shelter directory: http://www.h4ha.org/shelters/ and Sue, the Lollypop Farm is listed as a shelter that accepts snuggles! :claphttp://www.h4ha.org/shelters/USA/New_York/585/1-33-213-0.html

Hi- I was involved in a Critter Knitters Coalition Knit-a-thon project, hosted by Wendy Johnson, and one other person (I forget her name), a couple years or a year ago, and they had some crocheted blankies one was really cool. I don't know if it would be "unethical" to post a link to it here or not? (A link to the pattern for the crocheted blankie, that is.) :think

The other persons' name is Liz Maryland. I guess maybe you could contact them and see if you could use some of the patterns they are offering for their cause? The website is:www.critterknitters.org If you are making blankies for animals in need, I don't see why they would object.

Hi Everyone,

If you'd like to crochet an animal suggle for an orphaned animal and don't know where to send them, here's the info for Project Hope where I got my Angel and Scott's Grandma got Smokey. They were both orphaned/abandoned. Angel was just 10 weeks old. They will take snuggles from 14X14 all the way up to 36X36 for bigger doggies, any pet toys/supplies including food or coupons.

If you don't have a local shelter to send to, they would appreciate anything sent! If your local shelter will accept snuggle blankies, that's fine too- send them to a homeless animal in your area!

Thank you!

I spent an hour a few months ago trying to find info on Lollypop's site... you'd think if they were participating (I know someone who makes them for the shelter), they'd have a link on their site! LOL!

I just clicked Donna's link and found out our Humane Society accepts snuggles, I'll have to start using up my little balls of yarn and make them some. We got our old dog who passed away this past January from them.

Now I know what to do with all these tiny scraps of yarn :hook

Thanks Donna :)

Hey everyone,

Bev's Country Cottage has come to the rescue again! I made one of these the other day & am almost finished with one I started today. I really like it for the animal blankets. The pattern is called "Jennifer's 20 minute pet rug", but she uses a Q hook & I didn't like that. Too loose! But I used a P hook, still with the 2 stands, and it still works up quick and really cushy. I will post pics soon! Just trying to get some stuff finished up.

That looks really neat, I'd go down to a P or even an N with 2 strands rather than a Q, the Q makes too large and loose a stitch, even with 2 strands of bulky yarn.

That would work for a big granny square too.

My basic pattern-

I haven't written up yet, but about to soon as I get time...

ch 70 (or an even #- 70 makes about a 22 or 24" wide blankie for a large kitty or sm-med doggie),

sk 1ch, sc in next ch, sk next ch, 5dc in next ch across. Ch 2, turn,

5dc in sc, sc in 3rd dc of next 5dc group, sk next ch, repeat across.

Work for 40 rows.

Row 41: dc in each stitch across.

May have to do some adjusting but that is my basic snuggle pattern.... will do some editing later when I have time to sit down and write. Have a pattern for a round one too- have yet to write it out.

I was in between projects and started a pet snugglie last night ...finished it up this morning. Used a M hook and 2 strands of ww yarn. Made a 24" x 24" snugglie. It worked up really quick.

I just printed off the square snugglie from the link posted above. I'll probably do that one next and take them to one of many shelters listed that take snugglies in my area.

Just wanted to show you the last pet snuggles I have made:

The 2 square ones are from the "Jennifers 20 min pet blanket" pattern that I adjusted. I really like that pattern with the P hook. They are so cushy!! I have 4 or 5 others made from UFO's. These are small blankets, but I think I am now going to start making some a little bigger. I was originally going to give them to the Houston Humane Soc., but think I am going to give them to my favorite Adoption shelter instead. I am pretty sure they will take them. They ask for towels & laundry soap. I will check with them to make sure though.
