I'm also voting for the long a. For me the word rhymes with sane because my yarn keeps me sane :)

wow. I've been calling it a skeeeen. I'd never heard the long A version. Although the only person I've really ever talked about skeins of yarn before would be my Grandma and she was Romanian. Actually, I don't know if Ive ever really "heard" other people say it. Now I'm curious, I'm going to go mess with the ladies at Michaels tomorrow and see if I can get anyone to pronounce it without actually saying it myself. I'll just start showing people a skein of yarn and ask "what do you call this?" It could also be an experiment to see how long before they escort me out of the store.

wow, looks like my poll was completely bunk. but i've never heard anyone call it a SKANE, so that's why it's not an option on the poll. it seems i forgot that last little bit of the i before e rhyme (neighbor and weigh).

thanks for the opinions guys. i was just curious, and i thought it would be fun to see what was most popular.

I think she is confused but she may have heard "Hank of Yarn" so

hank + skein = skank
