Back loop only of chain???

jldozer

Question

I understand the back loop instructions when working into a row of stitches but this pattern starts with a chain and then for row 1 says to TR into the chain, working in back loop only.

Does that mean just going under the top strand of the chain?

Thanks!

Working into the back loop gives you a more finished edge at the beginning of your piece.

Let's see if I can describe it without pictures (although hopefully someone knows a link with pics!): when you chain, you have kind of an oval shape at the front with a horizontal bar in the back. THAT is the blp.

I find it a little slow going working into the blp only of the chain, but so worth it.

When finished, it looks more like the last row of crochet with the nice finished look, and saves you having to sc along the opposite side of the starting chain to give it that nice look!
