'Open-weave' afghan patterns?

I'm looking for some afghan patterns that have an 'open-weave' for lack of a better term. Something like a granny square feel, but a different pattern. I want to make one for my brother & his wife who have moved to New Mexico and I've looked around on CPC & a few other place but nothing has caught my eye. Any suggestions?

Terry Kimborough's patterns are always rather open and breezy and tend to look more "victorian". The Cabana Wraps book is great if you are looking for something more "metropolitian".

Do you like filet? You could take a rectangular pattern for a doily and turn it into afghan size with yarn. Here's a filet pattern designed throw size, top row right (you need to sign up, but it's free).

Terry Kimbrough's book "Best Loved Afghans" has a lot of these open-look afghans like you're talking, most very lacy and romantic looking.
