question about freeform

Is freeform specifically when you make the little pieces and join them together? Or is it broader than that?

 

I like to work without a pattern. I'll think of something I'd like to make, then pick up a hook and make it happen. Is that more at design?

Freeform is what ever you want it to be. I've done some by piecing together scrumbles, as well as just keep adding to a main piece. There are no rules.

Thanks for clearing that up. Sometimes I just sit down with a hook and see what happens. Wasn't sure what to call it .

Whenever possible, I just crochet a little, knit a little and most of the time I allready have the shape in mind.....like a sweater, shawl, bag, scarf, hat.

I think she's got a great tutorial on how to make a "scrumble", which is a small collection of motifs added onto and sewn together to make a small, usually palm sized piece (called a scrumble). You usually make a bunch of these and then assemble them into a finished garment, or afghan or wall hanging, etc. The possibilities are endless.

 

She should also have a link to a store that carries her newly updated book: "Freeform: Serendipitous Designs for Knitting and Crochet" 2nd edition. I ordered this book when it first came out (in 2002?) from Threads and More in Australia, but I think you can find it on Amazon these days.

 

I learned how to freeform from this book and later, I was lucky to find some wonderful teachers to take classes from. Everyone has their own unique take on this art form.
