Question

FOR UPDATE SEE POST #45

Hello everyone. While I have checked in briefly here and there, I have been off the board for quite some time (since late May). My sister was in a horrible car accident, was seriously injured and tragically she lost her son. It has been hard, but she is recovering slowly. We take it one day at a time. I have been so focused on her recovery that I have not been able to crochet much or read, which are two things I really enjoy. I have also had to travel to three hours to the hospital, so I miss my family too. While in the intensive care unit with my sister I met a little boy who is 6 years old and was in an awful car accident himself. His recovery has been very slow and he is facing 6 months of intense physical therapy and then another year of routine physical therapy. He lost both of his parents in the accident and his grandparents are caring for him. I just started making him a comfortghan, which I almost have completed, but I also want to make him a teddy bear. I need a pattern for a teddy bear. I have searched the book stores, craft stores, and recently the internet and just cannot find a good teddy bear pattern. I want it to be a huggable size (not to tiny for a 6 year old) and I want the arms and legs to be movable. If any of you know of a pattern that I can buy or download from anywhere, can you respond here or send me a pm? Thanks to everyone in advance.

None of these bears have movable limbs, but they are cute!

You might try this cute one:

You wouldn't have to make the dress for this one:

How about a panda?

Good luck! And best of luck to your sister and the little boy!:hook

Yes, I need to be able to crochet it while in the hospital with my sister. I wont have access to a sewing machine or anything. I can only carry yarn and hook :hook. But thank you so much for the kind offer.

Thank you so much for the links. I did like one of the teddy bears and printed out the pattern for later. I just wanted to make him one that had movable arms and legs because he had one named "Booker" that he lost in the accident. Booker had glasses (that looked like those worn by the popular kid wizard that we are not suppose to name) and he had movable arms and legs. So I am still searching for a pattern. I have been on line searching for the past two hours!! Ggggrrrrr.

Thank you so much for the links, and I am going to make one of those for my SIL who is having a baby due in October. Thank you again.

I am still looking so anyone who knows of a pattern book I can buy or a pattern I can download, please let me know.

Well, after four hours of searching the internet, I am getting discouraged. I just feel like I don't want to settle for less than this brave little boy wants or deserves. His grandparents have not been able to find him another bear and it just seems like I should be able to find a pattern and make what he lost. I know it won't be the same, but it could be close. Did I forget to mention the bear he had was crochet. Anyway, now I am off to Borders and then Barns and Nobles, Michaels, Joannes, Beverleys and anywhere else I can think of. I didn't realize this would be so hard!! Anyway, I am taking my blackberry with me and will check it constantly, so if any of you out there find or know of a pattern . . . . I am happily welcoming any suggestions at any time. Thank you everyone!!

I got a book from the library called "100 Crochet Projects" by Jean Leinhauser & Rita Weiss. It has a crochet pattern for a teddy bear that has fairly moveable arms and legs on page 214. I have been making it for my grandmother, and am almost finished. It's a pretty good size. You could probably add glasses to it. Goodluck to your sister and that poor little boy. I hope you find a good pattern for him!

Here are some of my bookmarks for crochet bear patterns - you might be able to adapt these patterns to make a jointed bear:

http://katcrochet.com/strawbearie.htm

http://www.berroco.com/exclusives/harry/harrybear.html (knit pattern but very cute!)

http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa110897.htm (13" tall - there are also clothes to make for this one.)

http://bhg.com/bhg/story.jsp?storyid=/templatedata/bhg/story/data/GreatGifts_GiantPanda_09172003.xml (18" tall)

http://www.jmwjewelry.com/toys/cr/bears.html (has links to all kinds/sizes of bear patterns - some free and some for $)

As for the glasses, I think you can purchase some wire shaped glasses for dolls in a craft dept./section of a store. At least, I remember seeing some but I don't remember the exact shape/sizes of them. You can always try searching online for doll eyeglasses and/or santa eyeglasses.

Here's a few links to help you get started or give you some ideas for the glasses depending on the size of the bear you make:

I was thinking of the same pattern. I've done it with 2 strands and a larger hook and it turns out a bit bigger *over 24 inches* and it's very cuddly. I know they make joints that you can put into the bear to make them move-able. The major hobby type stores should have them in the doll section.

Ok, the craft store that was 30 min out of town was a bust for the teddy bear pattern. But I got a book with a cute "Hobby Horse" pattern it it. I must have looked though 20+ books!! Goodness I am tired, and hungry. I need a taco. Who would have thought it would be this hard to find a teddy bear pattern. Originally I thought I would just get on the internet and purchase and download one from somewhere, boy was I wrong!! Well I am going to eat something before I continue the "Great Teddy Bear Pattern Hunt". Thanks everyone! If any of you should happen across one, please pm me or post here. Thanks!!

I am looking for this book right now. I called our library and they do not have it, but I am looking at all of the book stores to see if I can buy it. Thank you so much. Wish me luck and cross your fingers.

Which pattern was it on that page? And what seller? I know that you can contact some of the sellers on Etsy and they may be willing to list a pattern for you again if it's sold out. I've done that before for some patterns as well as a set of crochet hooks so don't give up hope just yet without trying to contact the seller first. :hug

It sounds like you are after this pattern made by kristieskids?

If so, definitely contact Kristie by e-mail to ask her about the pattern and she will probably list one for you. I think she is also a member of Crochetville so you could also send her a PM here. :)

P.S. Here's a link to one of Kristie's free patterns at Crochetville:

I have that pattern. It's smaller though. And she is on this sight as well. KristieMN. I made it for a baby that was in NICU last month.

How small is it? Is it big enough for a 6 year old to snuggle up with?

Thank you all so very much. This has turned into quite the crusade. My DH is laughing and talking to a friend of ours on the phone and telling him we have been on a teddy bear pattern hunt since 7am and once I set my mind to something there is no changing it!

We are now headed to a craft store about a half hour away because a gal at Michaels said they have tons of pattern books for children's toys. I want to thank everyone so much for your kind assistance, this is turning into quite the project, but it is such a good cause and I feel so motivated to do this, I believe there is a reason I feel such a strong need to do this. It just came to me and now I have to do it.

I don't know how big it is but since it's made with a size F crochet hook, you might be able to change the hook size to make a bigger size bear from the pattern. You could always ask Kristie about it, too. :)
