How many of you knit as well as crochet?

Hey, thanks for putting me onto the knitting group here. I didn't know about that. It will be fun to hang out with crocheters who knit (not many of those on my regular knitting forum)....Lisa

I love knitting. Crochet will always be my first love but I enjoy knitting as well as many other crafts from embroidery to scrapbooking to making jewelry.

I recommend you join both groups. The beginners group has more things going on. The beginners groups isn't all beginner stuff, really. There is a Sock KAL and Scarf KAL.

Now when you come to the 'ville and click new posts you will get new post for the knitting groups. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page you can see if there is something new in the groups.

Okay! Thanks for this. :)

My heart belongs to crochet, but I learned to knit just last month. I made one dishcloth and it was fun to learn,,,, but crochet is my first love and will stay so. I might knit once in a while just for a change!

I love to crochet, but I really really want to learn to knit. I have recently tried to learn using books, internet, and even a dvd. For some reason I just can't get the hang of it and it's driving me crazy.

Julexia,

Have you tried knittinghelp.com and using the continental method? Consider joining the 'ville knit special interest user group so we can try and help :)

  • 4 weeks later...

Lately, my left thumb just kills me when I knit. Just a little knitting and my thumb is sore for days.

So for the past few months I've been crocheting. I learned to crochet first, over 20 years ago and to knit 10 years ago.

I just need a few more crochet projects besides my never ending thread tablecloth to keep my busy.

I love them both, but apparently knitting doesn't love me right now. :no

Oh well, more time to crochet. :clap

I can knit pretty well, but I'm not that fast. Knitting big things like a blanket, can be a total pain because it takes a really long time unless you use the humongous needles. I do love the cool cables and stitches I can do with knitting though. I like both knitting and crocheting, but I prefer crocheting because it's faster and I can do more things with crocheting than knitting.

I might be strange, but I love to knit more than crochet. The past few months, whenever I crochet, my wrist starts hurting, or one or more fingers go numb.

Now with knitting, I whip some things out in nothing flat. In the past couple of weeks, I've been whipping out slippers left and right, and I really don't have much time to work on the needles.

One of the reasons I like doing both is because I can switch it up when I start getting repetitive motion injuries. Also, like you, I go through phases where I do nothing but knit for months, then suddenly I miss crocheting and pick up my hook again. Honestly I have done far more knitting than crocheting in the past couple of years. I guess I have been trying to catch up my skill level in knitting to match my crochet abilities. Knitting is a lot more complicated than crochet - for example in knitting there are several different decreases depending on whether it slants to the right or the left, whether it is on the wrong side or right side, whether it is decorate or invisible, etc. There is a LOT to learn! But I have enjoyed it and feel pretty confident that I am beginning to master it for the most part.

Lisalu that is exactly where i am at right now. I'm in major learning mode with knitting. Crocheting is somethign I still pick up when I am in need of something I know and understand. So it's all good :)

i've tried knitting a couple of times, but it's definately not as easy as crochet, even with just the simple patterns. I usually go right back to crochet.

I consider myself both a knitter and hooker equally. Though I've been doing crochet since I was 8 and only learned to knit three years ago.

I will always prefer crochet for afghans and most home decor items. It's just so much quicker. Also I like making thread snowflakes and angels...which just don't work as well in knit.

I recently joined my neighborhood knitting group and got back into knitting...then I remembered why I quit long ago! When I make mistakes in crocheting it is soooo easy to pull out and repair. What a pain in knitting! I gave it a few months trial then went back to crocheting. Now several people are having me teach them crochet!

I'm trying to teach myself how to knit but so far have not been too successful. Did finally learn how to cast on. :clap Whoopee!!! I haven't given up on it yet, but crochet sure seems easier. I have a question for the knitters here, is it easier to use the larger needles when learning? I bought some large needles this weekend hoping that will make it easier, but haven't tried them yet.

I think it depends on what you mean by large. I think that if you go past #10 needles it will get more difficult rather than easy.

Don't forget we have a knitter group for 'villers who knit or are learning. Come on over and join us. Just go to your user CP and click on Mange Groups. Join both so you can see all the cool stuff everyone is making.

Taught myself to do both when I was a kid but there's way more patterns with knitting (certainly pre-internet) so that's what I've done.

But having recently sprained a finger from too much knitting (did you know knitting is an extreme sport ? :D ), I've picked up my hook again whilst the finger is healing and am loving the speed of crochet and what's available to me now.

Sure I knit ... it would never have occurred to me to prefer one over the other. Some things, like a cardigan or a Xmas Stocking are better in knit, wheareas whoever heard of knitting a table runner? well, probably someone will send me a ton of patterns but really I have my preferences!:lol

And of course I tend to quilt my quilts instead of knitting or crocheting them.

When trvaeling I think nothing beats crochet because there's so much less space taken up and the security guys don't haul you into a back room when they see a little crochet hook :hook

I just started knitting. I'm glad I did.... it's fun! :knit I love learning to do new things, I'm glad I finally taught myself how to knit, I used to think knitting was too hard. I only started a couple of weeks ago and I'm already on Double Pointed Needles making my first mitten! :D

I do both, but am more proficient with crochet. Had my grandma reteach me knitting winter of 2006 (she tried when I was 8 or 9 and it just didn't happen:lol ). Then about 7 or 8 months later I taught myself to crochet from books. I enjoy both. Crochet is instant gratification...knitting is more relaxing (ie. can put me to sleep). but I enjoy knitting blankets for my little girl (not too big so they don't take forever...and she plays with them, uses them and drags them everywhere with her:D ).
