Most clueless remark you've heard?

Recommended Posts

I've gotten the knitting/crocheting thing many times, and have to remind myself that unless you have done one or the other, you wouldn't know the difference between the tools or process used. It's like taking me to an auto manufacturing shop full of machinery and telling me to make a part, I wouldn't have a clue.

But as far as clueless goes, the worst I have ever heard or seen has to be a TV commercial. It was supposed to be for Toilet Paper (I won't mention brand names), that was quilted, and there were a bunch of cartoon women armed with knitting needles clicking away to make the paper quilted. Now THAT is clueless!!! How embarassing for a big name company to have an ad shown to millions, which was totally inaccurate, and should have been researched or corrected long before it hit the air...(and was shown for months before someone caught on and changed the knitting needles to sewing needles).

I remember the first time I saw it I sat there with my mouth hanging open, to stunned to even laugh.

I remember that! That was quite a boo boo on their part.

I occassionaly get the "knitting" comment. I crochet on the subway to and from work and mostly I get asked "what are you making" or "I wish I could do that". The best though was when a group of teenagers sat accross from me and I could hear them whispering "you ask her", "no you ask her". Finally I said "ask me what?" and they had a ton of questions about what I was doing. I was more than happy to talk to them about crocheting and the project I was working on which was Hats for Knots of Love.

I guess I've been lucky that I've not gotten any negative comments.

WOWEE WOW WOW! That one hurt ME! I got your THING....ouch!

Ugh that hurt me too. Wow....I think she must be related to my inlaws! Hopefully there was a bit of joking in there :(

I was making baby blankets when my fil called a few weeks ago & made the mistake of telling him so. I got the earful of "cheaper at Walmart" and how I could be out doing "real" work instead.

Back in the spring my Mom took me to an appointment for my eye specialist. While I was in having my eyes looked at, my Mom was crocheting in the waiting room. A young couple that was waiting for another doctor (that shares a waiting room) were watching my Mom. Finally the guy was asking her questions and somehow one thing led to another, and Mom taught the guy how to crochet!

I like to imagine he's crocheting baby blankets, bonnets, and such in his spare time (his girlfriend/wife was within a couple months of having their baby).

On topic: Yesterday I was talking about crocheting to one of my co-workers and he says "Make me a scarf". (no please or would you be able to or anything).

I just stared at him for a few moments til he turned red and turned away, then I gave him a price and told him I'd make him one only if he paid for it. He agreed so I picked up yarn last night for it.

I do get the knitting/crochet thing too! I dont really correct it though, I just reckon if they are not into it then its not worth my while explaining the difference! Usually my youngest chips in with 'well actually, it crochet' lol. He will tell anyone who will listen! The one comment that bugs me ever so slightly is when I am doing a craft stall with my crochet items I often hear 'did you make all this yourself?' Yes of course I reply through gritted teeth lol. I often wonder where they think I get it all from lol!

I've had many confuse my crocheting with knitting -- happens almost every time I crochet in public. I have never had it bother me a bit. If not for grandmas that crocheted, I may have never known the difference so why should everyone? I just count myself fortunate that someone introduced me to this wonderful hobby long ago! After all, if they are showing interest, they are probably reaching out for a little human contact and I don't want to reward that with a nasty remark. I do nonchalantly mention this is actually crochet but I make sure to not make them feel foolish about making the mistake. Now if they made a smart-aleck remark, I would not be nearly so nice about it! But (knock on wood) that has never happened with crochet. :)

In some areas they seem to use "knitting" to describe both. The dictionary actually says:

"knit·ting   [nit-ing] Show IPA noun

1.the act of a person or thing that knits.

2.the act of forming a fabric by looping a continuous yarn.

3.knitted work."

So, in a very loose interpretation, I guess any act of forming fabric by looping a continuous yarn (which is done in crochet too) could be called "knitting." ;)

I would love to see the faces of these small town women if I said I was a "hooker"! :laughroll

I do live in a small town, and whenever I tell anyone that, most of them laugh, sometimes a little nervously, I'll admit!!!:rofl:rofl

I agree with the age issue people seem to have with crocheting. I have heard so many times "isnt that something old ladies do?" i really hate that. Im tryin to teach my daughter how to crochet but i can tell they are unsure of it because of what they hear people say to me. I hope they can learn to overcome what is said and find joy in the art

Okay, this is kinda the opposite of the topic here, but I thought you might all appreciate it. It's not a clueless remark, but me being caught almost speechless. ;)

While waiting for my car at a car wash, I sat next to a gentleman and started to knit. He turned and said to me that it was nice to see that people still knit because he thought was a dying art. ... Can you imagine my surprise, that he knew what I was doing ~~~ AND called it art? Can ya'll picture the blank, clueless look on my face? His remark left me nearly speechless. :faint But is was so nice to see someone recognize it. :)

I would get that comment when I would crochet in college (that's when I really started to get going). I'd sit in my room and attempt to work on a scarf, when someone would come down the hall and tell me I looked like a little old grandma sitting there crocheting.

I'm actually very pleased with the number of people from work who have told me that they want to learn to crochet. I've had 3 or 4 of my friends ask about it, and they're all about my age! It's fun to see people interested in learning.

If I have that much time on my hands I should get a real job.

I am like an old lady.

Why am I wasting so much time and money on that when I could buy it at ..........

*this is why I live online and don't speak to people. Too much rudeness and ignorance.*

Amen Sister! I second this comment!

I'm glad I don't run into people who give such rude remarks! I have honestly never had anything but positive comments about my crochet. People say things like, "Wish I could do that," and "That's beautiful, how do you do that?" But I've never had anyone suggest it was a waste of time or money or tell me I should get a real job! I would probably go speechless and think of an appropriate comment too late. I don't know why anyone would want to do that to another person! Sorry you have run into such louts!

Move down south -- I find the people here so friendly and courteous overall. There are some exceptions but for the most part, I just love it here. :D

The few times I've taken my crochet in public I've been asked where I learned. Or "I've always wanted to try that". I try to give them ideas of how to start. I've never heard a rude remark. My fiancee jokes with his friends (who also like my work) that one day I'm going to make a car cover or a couch cover. I don't know why this is funny to him but it makes me smile.

One thing I want to say is about the people who say "I thought only old ladies did that". 'Old Ladies' were once young girls too.

You are soo right about people in the south being friendly and courteous. Every time I have visited my sister-in-law in Texas I see nothing but friendly people.

I have only had one "strange" comment about my crocheting and I just let it go. Probably has something to do with 12 years of Catholic School and the Nuns telling us to only think kind things about others. That doesn't always work for me :blush but most of the time it does. :devil

I think I've posted in this thread before, but currently the most "clueless" remark in regards to anything crafty that I do (crochet, cake decorating, card making, especially if the project is elaborate and ambitious) is "someone's got too much time on their hands..." I made Christmas cards this year that were popout ones...and someone actually said that to their wife, who turned around to him and challenged, "and why would you say that?" I try not to take it personal, especially now at the age I am...it's not even that the remark is clueless or rude and insensitive, but the fact that to some people there is simply NO VALUE in anything crafty, handmade, regardless of how good it is, how many awards were given, no matter how many compliments...they do NOT value it for whatever reason...I don't get it, however, there is a lot of things in this world that I don't value or get...I try to let such comments slide...what's the alternative anyway...I don't want to play tit for tat with anyone, in the scheme of life, these comments aren't that important and at the end of the day, they are simply a distraction if I let them bother me...still, yeah, that particular comment, "someone has too much time on their hands" grates on my last nerve...especially in regards to something crafty...I reserve that comment for the stupid crap that some people pull, especially when alcohol is involved...you know, like some of the idiots that video themselves trying to surf in a flood being pulled by a car or whatever...that's someone that has too much time on their hands...or people doing destructive things...

People constantly ask me "Why were YOU getting yarn?!" There is such a "granny stigma" attached to crocheting and knitting, but you know what? I know women in their 30s who are grandmas and women who are in their 90s who are grandmas, so what is the "granny standard" these days anyway??? By the way, I always get hassled by people like my tattoo artist, piercer... people like that (until they see something I have created like a hat with a skull on it or fingerless gloves with corset laces... then they are like "that is so cool. Make something for me!" SHEESH!

I guess the only clueless remark I know of is from my husband's boss. If he's trying to emphasize a point he'll end it with..." And by gosh, you can crochet that on a pillow!"

Still haven't figured out to do that....

Besides the knitting comment, simply anyone who tells me to my face that I'm wasting my time or that I have "too much time on my hands..." That is not just a clueless remark, it's insulting and rude and it ticks me off far more than anyone who comments that my crocheting is "knitting."

I mean I don't even care if someone were to tell me that what I was doing was "old women work..." which I have NEVER had said to me ever...even when I was 10 years old and crocheting...(of course, it was a different time then...)

This particular quote was from 2007..before we even heard of FB and associated games. If that comment was made to me now that is what I mention. I could be on FB all night and have a beautiful farm online, but at the end of the night what do I have? I mean REALLY have?

I still do FB some (my kids are on there :D) but I only play word with friends with a few people. Figure at least I have to use my brain on that one.
