4" Teddy Bear/Doll "Spinny" Dress Especially For Cradle Purse

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I learned to crochet when I was 7, and some of the first things I made were dresses for my dolls. I'm all grown up now, but I still love to make dresses for them. When I was little, I was frustrated by trying to make a dress, and my Mom said simply, that if I put more than one stitch in the same space, it would be wavey, and that's all I needed. :) I don't know about you guys, but I hated wearing dresses as a child. However, if it was a dress with a long skirt that I could spin and it would poof out, then I LOVED it! This doll dress stays poofed out, so that's why it's called spinny.

For this, I used a teddy bear that I found on this webstie:

The cradle purses were found on this website:

The doll blankets are simple grannies, just 5 rounds with whatever size hook you used for the cradle purse/teddy bear.

I can't seem to get my pictures to post, so here's a link to a couple different color combinations.

Just the bears with dresses (only the light colored one is facing forward):

Materials:

Small amount of worsted weight acrylic yarn (or whatever yarn you used for the bear)

Size G/H hook You'll need whichever size you made the bear with. I crochet tightly, so I used an H.

Bodice:

Row 1: chain 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each across ch 1, turn(5 sc)

Row 2: sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn (5 sc)

Row 3: sc in each sc across, at end, DO NOT turn, ch 14, join with sl st to first sc of row (this makes a big ring)

Row 4-6: ch 1, sc in same space as joining, sc in each sc across, then sc in each chain made from row 3, work on the round (do not sl st to join the row, just sc and keep going, making 3 total rows of sc on the big loop)

Skirt (don't fo, just keep going, this is the fun wavy part!)

Row 7: from row 6 you ended on an sc, from here, you ch 2, and then do 2 dc in the same space as last sc from row 6. In each sc around, do 3 dc (this starts making the waves) across, join with sl st to top of ch 2 space

Row 8: ch 3, I've done this row two different ways, either by doing 2 dc in each dc across, or alternating doing 1 dc in space, then 2 dc in next space. I liked how both turned out, so just do what you like, it will be more wavy the more dc you have.

Row 9: ch 1, sc in each dc around

Straps:

Note: both ends should be at least 8" long to account for the bow in the back, and I'll explain.

Attach yarn with sl st to top corner of the boddice (the very first sc made for the dress) leaving a long 8" tail for weaving in later and bow. ch 6, fold dress in half, and join to the "loop" part in the middle with a sl st, ch 6, join to other corner of the boddice, fo, leaving a long 8" tail for weaving in. Now, weave in the tails going down the chain part, on both sides, when you are at the bottom (where it joins at the dress) leave long. Then, take both ends that are long at the sl at the bottom, and tie together for a bow. The picture of the bears has this done on the burgandy bear, and there's no tie on the pinkish/orange bear. You don't have to do a bow, but I hate weaving in ends, so this sort of helps that.

If desired, you can take a long piece of yarn, and weave it in the middle section, (end of the boddice row) and tie with a bow. The bears don't have "faces" yet, because I'm debating how to put eyes/nose/mouth that won't fall off and be a hazard to smaller children. I think they're cute as is, and I might just leave them like that.

I had a lot of fun with this pattern, and I hope someone out there does too! :) I'm making these for our Children's Hospital for the June focus in my charity group. If you'd like to test out this pattern for me, and send the bear/dress, then I'd love to donate it to the hospital as well. Thank you for looking at my pattern!!!

That is such a cute dress! Your cradle purses and bears turned out really cute. I've been working on a couple myself, they're a lot of fun and work up pretty easily.

You're making these for such a great cause, good for you!

Thanks again,

Thanks for all the positive comments! I've been crocheting for a long time, but I never thought I could come up with a pattern. This one was really easy though, and I hope lots of you can use it (or modify to make bigger) for projects in the future. I know it's pretty simple, but thanks for the comments! :)
