a serious yarn question

You can use any yarn you want to on socks, but if you want to actually wear them in your shoes, fingering weight is the way to go. Patons Grace is a bit heavier, sport weight, I believe. I have the Annie's Attic booklet Stocking Feet and some patterns in it call for fingering weight, and some sport weight.

A warning about cotton over wool. (from personal experience) Crocheted socks have little give as it is, a cotton will have no stretch to it at all. The other problem being that when they do stretch, as all cottons to with wear, it will become very loose, baggy, and won't stand up. The real problem is that once stretched out, it's nearly impossible to get it to go back to it's original shape. *grumble* As soft as Grace feels, you'll end up cursing it for being such a pain.

As for the size, Donna's right. Grace is a little thicker than is average, though there are patterns written for sport weight socks.
