Yarn weight?

Is there a simple test to figure out the weight (worsted, fingerling etc) of unlabled yarn?

I just received some from ebay that is allegedly worsted weight, but there's no way that can be true. It's a lovely alpaca yarn but soooooooo skinny. I'm not sure even using 2 strands would make it worsted weight. <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/TearHair.gif" /> I'm really bummed, I wanted to make a shawl with it so I bought two 660 yd skeins which would have been plenty....if it was really worsted weight.

I haven't contacted the seller yet, I wanted to have some ammo on my side first.

Thanks!

I did some searching and came up with this

<a href="http://www.spinderellas.com/patterns/yarnchart.html" target="_new">yarn chart</a>

I got 22 wpi for the yarn I bought.

To be scientific, I checked some RH for comparison. 12 wpi.

So it's waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy off

This is the link to the <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=8132942438&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT" target="_new">auction</a> , is there anything there I'm missing? 200 grams is approx 7 oz.

I'm very sad <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/worried.gif" />

that's a great chart! thanks for the link:mouse

it's a very pretty yarn, i'm sorry it's smaller than you wanted :hug

that really blows.:<>

is it really smaller than lace weight? because isn't that sz 10?

i think you're supposed to be fairly loose with the wrapping....

is there a particular color you wanted to stand out? maybe mix it with a sport of that color?

or use a larger hook and get a more open shawl?

let us know what you decide to do (good price though :danc - that is, if you find something to do with it).

i got some really great novelty black wool that ended up being basicly thread - i mailed it to chelle :mail thought it would make a cute bear, cause i know i would never had used it.:thinking2

I'll tell ya, I'm looking at some size 10 and some RH, it's almost as thin as the 10.

Off to write to the seller <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/boxing_2.gif" />

the auction does clearly state its worsted... even though it doesnt look it to me in the picture.. i would have trusted that description as well .. if you really like it and want to use it .. i would suggest maybe holding a starnd of black with it to make it thicker and you can get your shawl out of it.. its just a shame you have to get more yarn to complete a project that you thought this yarn would cover..

i would write the seller and see what they will do for you .. some refund and others dont but since there was error on their part they should ..

The auction also says it's great for WEAVING... which is where I went wrong with my Ebay disappointment. My *YARN* was actually THREAD.

Sorry you got taken. :( Maybe you can arrange a swap here at Crochetville?

I wrote the seller on Thursday, no response yet. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/thumbsdown.gif" /> I just sent another email, we'll see what he does.

I did see where it said great for weaving, but you can weave with heavier yarn so I went with the worsted description.

I guess I'm so mad <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/mad.gif" /> because it's the same as if he sent me half of what I ordered. If I had missread the auction, that would be different. I'm hoping he'll send me another 2 skeins of yarn, doubt he will, but a girl can hope, can't she?????? <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/fin.gif" />

Some ebay sellers are really nice. Some aren't. If you explain that by worsted weight, you thought it was thicker yarn, showing him the chart, he should do something to compensate you. When my husband and I were selling on ebay a couple of years ago, we refunded a couple of people who were unhappy with it. (They read the description wrong, not really our fault, but we didn't want them to be upset.) Some will go ahead and do that. If you show him the chart and prove that by calling it WW he was misleading you, he should do something to help you out. If not, I would take it to ebay. You do have that option because technically, he lied in the description, whether he meant to or not.

I don't wanna be patient <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/nahnahbooboo.gif" />

They have listed new stuff on Sat, Sun & today, so they've been online. I'll give them a few more days, but I'll be cranky until then <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif" />

Maybe I'll just have to learn to knit so I can knit a laceweight shawl out of it!

Sort of <g>

They finally wrote back. They are insisting it is worsted weight, but they will refund me the full amt + shipping if I return it (which I'm going to do). As long as I get the refund in a timely manner, I will leave them positive feedback since they are fixing the problem.

I wish one of you guys could feel this stuff and tell me I'm not crazy though <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/Loco.gif" /> I sent them a link showing how to measure wpi & what it translates too.

I know, I'm sounding obsessive now, aren't I??

:rotfl deb, you are toooo much!:lol

well, at least you are getting your money back :huh

although, i know it is what you were looking for. there is a place on ebay i have found that has good prices and is truthful in their description....

actually, someone here told me about him......

john's trading post

mine this is a link to the last cone i bought from here. i love it. it feels just like the new RH casual cot'n

just a teeny bit bulky. although he calls it 'homespun' it is just referring to the type of yarn it is... not the bulk. he lists the yards per pound... which is what you need to go by on his stuff. anyhow, the yarn is a good price and he doesn't 'overcharge' on shipping. wow, did i just give a good recommendation or what :P

here is another lady that i like to order from.... there is also a really good one elizabeth (3olives) buys from... i don't have the wait, yes i do another

i have happily ordered from her before as well.

Rebecca!!!! <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/lildevil.gif" />

What are you doing to me????

They all look great. I just put on bids for 2 things from Yarns Woman. I need something to soothe my wounded ebay ego <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/angel.gif" />

  • 2 weeks later...

Just wanted to close with a happy ending.

Today my full refund, including return shipping, appeared in my paypal account. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/bounce012.gif" /> No threats or screaming fits needed. I am a happy camper again and I did leave positive feedback <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/thumbsup.gif" /> since I feel they handled the situation properly.

So if anyone needs some very nice, but very skinny Alpaca, I would recomend this seller <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/nahnahbooboo.gif" />
