Question about ebay

Ok ya'll here's a question for you ebayer's. I've been drooling over the yarns there for weeks now, and have won several auctions that I've bid of. :heart it! My question is about the cones... I tend to skip over those because I was under the impression that they are more of a thread than a yarn... I'm guessing from other posts that I am wrong in this assumption. How can I tell if it's yarn I can use? I'll be honest I haven't even clciked on them to read descriptions, I just assumed, and yup I know what assume means :D

Second question, what about the shipping on the cones? Is it expensive and is it still really cheaper to buy it that way if so? (Remember, I'm overseas. Though for the purposes of paying for shipping I only have to pay as far as NY, then the Army takes over. )

I'm thinking I have really been missing out on a good yarn source here lol....

Hi my husband is in the british army so I tend to buy off ebay.co.uk but I can help with some of your other questions. A lot of the yarn is fine but I use it doubled. I find a lot of the cones are really a good value even if I have to use it doubled. If they say good for weaving then that is a sure sign it is quite thin. Also most machine knitting yarn is fine. Each seller is different in their shipping prices. If postage is just the same price as continental US then they would normally list that.

Hope that helps.

Rachel,

We almost went to London instead of here, but the spot hubby was going for got taken like the day before he tried for it. So here we are in Germany instead :fall

Thanks :) I appreciate any input on the subject! I have a feeling I won't be passing up all those cones now lol. As if I don't spend enough time drooling over the rest of the yarn! :yes I know I do, but I can't help myself lol.

all i can say.. is read the desrciption CAREFULLY and if you have any questions ask the seller .. on ebay my favourite yarn seller is memc82.. she has great deals .. lots of neat yarns and her shipping is always reasonable.. if you want to know what it might cost you to have it shipped she will let you know allyou have to do isend her the zip code to where it needs to be shipped.. i have bought most of my yarn on the cone .. and i have gotten things that range from very small yarns (slmaot thread like - on purpose) up to big thick bulky chenille on the cone.. the shipping of course is by weight so read the description for that as well .. I know Melanie always says how much a cone weighs in the description.. also read it well because some people wont ship to an APO or overseas.. so you have to watch that as well or they try to make some money on the shipping costs.. so summary

1. READ THE DESCRIPTION WELL

2. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ASK THEM WELL BEFORE THE AUCTION ENDS

3. ASK FOR A SHIPPING QUOTE

4. HAVE FUN!

A good majority of the cone yarn out there is thread, but there are some lovely thicker yarns to be had as well.

As other people suggested, read the descriptions carefully. Check your Wraps Per Inch (WPI) or yards per pound. This chart gives a good idea of what to look for

18+ wpi is Lace = 2600+ yards per pound

16 wpi is Fingering = 1900 to 2400 yards per pound

14 wpi is sport = 1200 to 1800 yards per pound

12 wpi is worsted = 900 to 1200 yards per pound

10 wpi is bulky = 600 to 800 yards per pound

8 or less wpi is very bulky = 400 to 500 yards per pound

I found that info <a href="http://www.spinderellas.com/patterns/yarnchart.html" target="_new">here</a>

Here's another seller Miss Rebecca <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/lildevil.gif" /> got me hooked on <a href="http://stores.ebay.com/Johns-Trading-Post" target="_new">Johns-Trading-Post</a> He has some lovely chenille and homespun type yarn (where do they get all this yarn anyway????)

You guys are going to get me to buy some of these cones, I can see it already. And the fact that I want another shawl is buzzing in my brain too. See, you make me pull this smiley out of my files for the occasion. :ebay I'll have to watch a few things and see what's what.

You can guess how this will end, yes? :cloud9

wow, love the eBay smiley...just too cute!

About the cones of yarn, I've bought lots of coned yarn from memc, and now know that there are some that are more for rugs than garments (any that have olefin in them feel wierd), and that the cotton and rayons are really nice.

I discovered something the other day, I had a cone of a chenille that felt 'funny', even tho it didn't contain olefin. I made a scarf from it, rinsed it out, and it was so soft and even prettier than before I rinsed it out. I also wanted to check the shrinkage, and used very hot water..no shrinking at all. I wouldn't hesitate to use her cone yarns with any of the more expensive yarns, such as eyelash yarns.
