<FONT FACE="Verdana,Arial" SIZE=2>I am a a virgin of the yarn link!<img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/blush.gif" />

I am a touchy-feely type of buyer when it comes to yarn. I see all the nice yarn on the links that have been suggested but I am still a little reluctant to order from those places.

I need a little coaching.

How was your first time?

I would like your comments on your experience, what motivated your first purchase and/or how much you bought the first time?

Thanks in advance for your answer and I am looking forward to reading you</FONT><FONT FACE="Verdana,Arial" SIZE=2>Results (total votes = 11):</FONT><table bgcolor=#FFFFFF border=0 cellpadding=3 cellspacing=0 width="75%">

I have bought yarn a few times online but it's only been through Ebay.

The first time I bought over 50 pounds of all different types of yarn two big boxes! Loved every bit of it.

I have bought enough baby yarn to make a blanket for the GS and another smaller lot that had quite a bit of thread and a another where I bought 5 pounds of grey bulky chenille and yet another of 12 pounds of brown (thinner) chenille.

All the times I have been very happy.

I have yet to buy from someplace not on ebay lol

Edit to add

If you feel the need to touchthe yarn before you buy you could always scope out what you want at your LYS and then buy it online.

Kari said it best.. its best to know your yarns or know your seller really .. i have the best seller.. memc82 she has great yarn reasonably priced and if i have questions she answers them...

i have bought from stores on line as well but i went out to my LYS to make sure i was getting a deal and to touch what i was going to get...

I've only bought through eBay. Some of the yarn was through NuMei (which I liked) and also Fiber Options (Three Olive Matini's connection), which I loved. I've also bought skeins off of people who have leftovers of Wool-Ease etc. I do check out prices at my LYS and fell it up there and then decide. Also, factor in shipping prices!!

I did make one purchase off of eBay for some Fun Fur, the price was too good to be true, and it was. I never received it and had to file a complaint through Paypal to get my money back. Mostly, I've had good experiences!!!

I order online most of the time. We have a Michael's, JoAnn's and Wal-Mart here but none of them has a great selection. Herrschner's had a huge Annual Fall Yarn Sale and that was where I bought from first.

Most of the time I feel like I'm getting a deal, but sometimes I just order because I can't get what I want here. I try to get free shipping codes as much as possible or half-off yarns. And if I come across a price that's really good I buy just because it's a good price...

I do a lot of shopping on-line anyway so I'm pretty comfortable ordering. I also like to ask around to see if anyone else has ordered from each store I'm thinking of buying from.

I have bought from ebay several times, not from ebay stores, just individuals. I have also ordered from Joann's, that order got here super quick, and I live in Germany! I was really impressed with that. If we are going to be here our full three years I will be doing a lot more online yarn shopping as there's just not a lot of choices at my base craft shop, and I have yet to be able to go out on the economy to see if there's anyplace to get yarn nearby, but with the exchange rate on the Euro...I'm probably better off buying online.

I agree with the others, go to your LYS or other places to feel yarns and possibly see colors before ordering online. Keep in mind that not all monitors show the same colors, the yarn from Joann's was not quite what hubby wanted, still lovely, and usable yarn, so it wasn't a loss, just not what he wanted for a blanket. And be sure you order enough to complete your project so you'll get all the same dye lot. (I always tend to buy one or two skeins too much... but I'd so rather have more than less *G* and I can always find a use for yarn!)

I would laso like to add to be SURE no matter where online you shop PLEASE compare the prices locally vs online including shipping!!! Sometimes I will think I am going to grab something really good off ebay cheap and once I compare with shipping included It's actually cheaper to go to hobby lobby.

I've not bought from ebay, but I have ordered from Elann and somewhere else. I do have a question: how do I access memc82's Ebay store? I have tried several times after seeing her recommened here and I cannot access her store.

Really look at the description (when buying on ebay).. and if you have questions, email the seller. My first purchase was of some *weaving* yarn.. which meant NOTHING to me. I ended up with tons of thread! turquoise and purple thread.. very pretty... but what am I gonna do with all this thread?

I've shopped at memc82 (thanks ALOT elizabeth :wink ).

I have loved almost every online transaction. the worst experience that I had, was that the yarn smelled smokey and I didn't know about it before hand. I"ll have to put pictures up of my cupboard now. Most of the yarn was from ebay. I Love smileys as well. Joanns is alright, but more expensive.

And Yes, always check shipping prices before buying!
