Furry yarn

I have an Aunt who wants me to try a scarf with "that furry yarn".

Now that could be one of a dozen kinds.

Which do you find best? Eyelash, jewel box, boa, fun fir.....

And what hook and stitch would you suggest? A place to get it would be nice as well. I need to work this one fast, before Christmas and I'll be mailing it. Thanks!

The boa yarn has been my favorite so far. It's also the cheapest I believe at Walmart. Lion Brand Fun Fur being the most expesive, and Bernat eyelash yarn being in the middle. The jewel box yarn is really pretty too but I've found that after washing this yarn it just doesnt look as great anymore upon close inspection.

Also, why a 5 foot long scarf? Im 5'3" tall and Im thinking a 5 foot scarf would go down to my shins! I like scarfs long, but ones that are still above my knees.

chelle think about it.. once its folded in half that is only 2.5 feet each side ... 30 inches...then wrap it around your neck.. to me 5 foot seems short LOL

amber my suggestion is to hold the fun fur or what ever kind of yarn you are going to use with another small yarn to help you see what you are doing.. i would use a basic single crochet or maybe a half double..

ROFL I knew there was something wrong with what I was thinking! I just couldnt figure it out, cause 5 feet seemed huge to me but I didnt even think about it being 2.5 feet each side lol, I was thinking straight down! I never measure the scarves I make. Thanks for setting me straight :rotfl

Thanks Gals. Yes, five foot is almost short. I have some in stock that are 8' foot. (And I'm not very tall either!)

Has anyone had any experience with Cha Cha?

I've yet to figure out what yarn is used in most of the scarves that are out, but I think maybe cha cha or fun fir. (I've never used either and not really inspected them.)

Isn't boa more of a feathery ribbon type of yarn? I don't think that's what she wants. I'll look it up though!

Oh, what did you mean by holding another yarn with it? Actually crocheting another type of yarn with it, two strands?

Would 5 ounces be enough do you think for it?

I'd better run. Thanks gals! I don't know what I would do without you!

Boa is really feathery on the strand, but worked up it's very plush. Patons cha cha is just like bernat eyelash yarn. I have both in my stash right now and just compared them. If you are going to use the eyelash or fun fur yarn, yes you should double it with another yarn - or I wonder if holding two strands of the fun fur would work just as well?

I just finished the fun fur scarf I was making last night, (just realized I forgot to get a pic will have to ask her for that lol) and what I ended up doing was holding a strand of very thin baby yarn with it, it helped immensly to see the stitches and didn't add any major weight or bulk to it. The baby yarn is totally invisble in the scarf actually. I used an M hook and made the scarf eight stitches wide and hdc, used two balls of fur... I can't remember how long it came out, but it's longer than the one I made for myself which only comes to my chest, there's no warpping of my scarf lol.

So, maybe four balls of fun fir or cha cha with a baby yarn through it?

I just realized that I need to order the yarn, when it gets here make the scarf and send it to her, hopefully before Christmas. Am I crazy or what!?!

Well, it is technically possible......

I've found I think it is the Cha Cha yarn for $3 a skein. Is that a good price? Thanks.

Thanks for mentioning to hold another yarn with the fancy stuff while crocheting. I tried to make a chain and a few stitches with some boa I had and about went batty! I might just have to give it a try sometime with that in mind!

my :twocents

what i have discovered about the furry fuzzy yarns is that they are very forgiving. most things that i've done with fun fur, i've done holding 2 strands of the fur and used an N. this makes nice and loose and stretchy stitches..... with the combination of the stretch and the furry fuzziness of it, if you miss or double a stitch - i don't think it's noticeable at all :w-brrr

just a thought

oh, guess it should be added that i've only ever worked in sc or hdc with this yarn:star

Alright, then has anyone made a 5' scarf out of furry stuff? I'm not sure how many ounces to get. I think I used about 5 ounces of Caron on a scarf. But, I doubt the gauge would be the same.

(Yes, I said last question. Shouldn't have. :))

I did make it to Mijers today and looked at all the furry yarns they have. They didn't have Cha Cha, but they had fun fir, Boa, Jewel Box, Fuzz and others I couldn't name.

I also got Camo yarn to make sox for the boys! (Christmas in 5 days, a gizilian projects to go......) A different blend for each. They'll love it! Gotta go! Thanks agian for all your help. I feel like I"m almost overdoing it!

:lol I meant overdoing it on asking advice, but you are right. I am overdoing it.

It's funny though, I work best under stress. Too much stress can break me true, and this is getting close, but I"m not doing it all! I'm only considering it because I have two sisters helping me! If the scarf isn't done, no big deal because there is no possibility of getting it to her before Christmas. I can be a little more leisurly on it. (I can't even order the yarn untill she lets me know what color she wants, and she works nights) The boy socks I would like to have done, but if they aren't (which they might not be) No big deal. They'll love them when we do give them to them. Danielle and Carrie are fine if their gifts are late, and the hats are almost done! Oh, and if we can't make something for the girls, they never knew we were going to so they won't be disappointed if it's late.

Not bad actually. But yes, I'm crazy. (And lovin it!) :lol:P:eek :rollin
