I'm wanting to make THIS for my MIL for her birthday/Christmas present, and I don't want to buy yarn off ebay if its not going to be enough LOL

just thought I would add, that I looked at a "chart" and it made NO sense to me at all, before you post a link to one :lol

Ok! I'm going for it :lol I'm buying THIS yarn, and if it doesn't work out, boy will i have a lot of red chenille to play with LMFAO according to the yarn chart located here This is close to the size I need :woohoo Now hubby can either just murder me for spending money, OR he can love me for SAVING money, as that is 3 times as much as I could get the jewel tones for at walmart for the same price! :nana

Well, it's a lot of yarn, but it's very very thin yarn.

I'm not sure the weight of Jewel Box, but I think it is at least a worsted weight, if not bulky (anyone know for sure?).

That yarn is a fingerling weight. There would probably be enough yarn there to make a shawl, but it would take a lot longer to make & have a different look because of the smaller yarn.

I'm going to post a <a href="http://www.spinderellas.com/patterns/yarnchart.html" target="_new">chart</a> anyway <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/nahnahbooboo.gif" />

What you need to look for when buying cones of yarn is the Yards Per Pound (YPP) or Wraps Per Inch. Most of the cone sellers do not use terms like worsted, bulky etc. The bulkier a yarn is, the lower the YPP is and the lower the WPI is. The thinner the yarn is, the more YPP and WPI.

Take a look at the chart and play with different types of yarn that you already have. Get out a ruler and wrap up an inch, counting the number of times you go around.

Hope that helps some!

lol you must have been typing the same time i was :P I did find a chart that was easier to understand and bought some THICKER yarn...its more like worsted weight....the caron, is worsted, almost bulky, but its i guess a thin bulky because its a thin chenille :fc

i bought the rojo red ford olefin chenille yarn 4.35lbs at 1200 yards per pound (light worsted weight), ive decided after I make the first one, and see how much I"m going to have to use to do it, I might make my sister in laws matching ones LOL It alllll depends. I got the auction for buy it now at $12.00 and I'm awaiting shipping price. So...:woohoo

I've got alot of chenille comming :lol

ok ... i have the same type of chenille in the first picture.. when making a shawl like the jewel box one you can do one of two things.. you can hold a double strand... or you can do it single strand you jsut have to do more rows to get your shawl the size you want because you will have to use a smaller hook to make it look right.... i have done both.. the first comes out very nice and with a nice weight to it.. if you want a lighter shawl then do it with one strand...

the second yarn you purchased with 1200ypp should be able to be used singly if you like or you can double that for a nice thick shawl...

Thanks for the info Beth, I figured if i posted here, you might notice my ignorance :lol The first chart I looked at was REALLY confusing, so I kept looking and found one I could understand.....Which saved me from buying the thinner yarn! Now I'll have a ton of the thicker yarn, and will have excuses to crochet 24/7 now :frog dh doesn't know what he's letting me do :lol
