Yeah! A thread crochet section!

Hi all,

I'm a 100% thread crocheter...(that's why I never enter the "yarn talk" conversations!) :) The only yarn I have is tucked away somewhere, whereas the thread...I believe it's taking over the house! ;)

I'm not prejudiced...that is, I don't care if you work with thread or yarn and I don't try to talk anybody into using thread...but I definitely prefer it.

Funny, I have a ball of thread here on my desk. I bought it because it was on clearance but I have no idea what I'm going to do with it.

Could you suggest a good starter pattern for a thread newby?

Think of it as your chance to nab some converts <g>

Nab a convert? I'll try! :lol

I don't know where to start. There are a lot of small crochet thread projects I consider easy...you might just try doing some plain old "swatches" or something in dc's or sc's or whatever you want with a steel hook and thread...just to get used to the feel of it.

As Rebecca mentioned, bookmarks are small, easy projects. There are a lot here:

www.crochetpatterncentral...kmarks.php

(The only problem I can think of from here is what pattern to choose?! ;) I looked through all of those bookmark patterns recently because I wanted to make a few. I ended up making the one here:

but I think, to begin with, you'll want to find something a bit easier. I left the tassel off...I'm tired of tassels at the moment!

Have fun!!! :thumbsup

I'm just starting to try thread crochet. Rachel, that bookmark (Mrs. G's Bookmark) was the exact one I chose for my first project! :bigsmile It's coming along okay, but I need a smaller hook than I have. Must make a trip to Walmart.

I've seen that Leisure Arts booklet, an am very tempted to get it. First, I will check out all these links. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/cloud9.gif" />

Donna, that is a coincidence!! I looked through all of those bookmarks, and, although about seven or eight made it to my absolute favorites list, that is the one that I made (at least half a dozen times)! I love how quickly it works up and how lacy it looks. Friends of mine loved it as well! :rock

I think you'll have fun with it. I know I do! Now what I haven't tried (and what I don't want to try) is thread sizes smaller than 10 with a really microscopic hook. People that crochet in yarn think that even the larger steel hooks for thread are microscopic, but really, they aren't! :rock

Hi,

Yarn is what most people use. It's softer and way thicker and is usually more varied. There are so many kinds of yarns it's unreal. Here's a picture of some yarn:

Here's a picture of thread:

See the difference?

Thread is much smaller and has to be worked with a much smaller hook. It produces daintier items like bookmarks, cute clothing (my favorite), tableclothes, and things like that.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! :thumbsup

I've just started trying thread crochet and am finding my hands are really tense/tired after I do only a few stitches. Do you wrap the thread around your fingers differently than when you use yarn? With yarn I don't do anything fancy like wrap it around my pinky, so it feels wierd to do this with thread. Or should I just try to relax a bit? I'm too young to have my hands be so cramped up!

Also, I used 1 Tbsp cornstarch in 1/2 cup hot water to starch a bookmark over the weekend. It definitely "worked," and is now stiff as a board, but can I decrease the amount of starch in the future so things aren't super-stiff?

Thanks everyone!

Jennie

Exactly what I thought it was. I usually use thread for doilies or the x-mas bells I crocheted last x-mas (pic. in blog).

I've tried to crochet a poncho from some Noro yarn, but didn't quite get the hang of it :)

I try to have at least two projects going at the same time. I also get a bit tired when I use thread so I either knit or do some Tunisian crochet.

Jennie 7,

I'm not big on starching items, so I can't help you there. Anybody else??

As for getting tense, I'm used to thread so I can go for a long time before my hands start to freeze up. I tend have my thread draped over my left pointer finger, though, instead of wrapped around my pinkie.

Did this help, or do you still have questions? I'll be glad to answer them if I can. :bounce

Rachel, great advice, thanks! :wave I'll investigate draping over my pointer finger. Oh and sorry I didn't create a new topic for this section with my question...I'm still getting the hang of these boards!

I'm actually thrilled that you don't "have" to starch thread crochet items...I sorta assumed that it was required on a lot of small projects like snowflakes and bookmarks. But maybe that's because my 1st thread bookmark turned out to be a wonky rectangle...until I starched the heck out of it and pinned 'er into the proper form!

A lot of people do starch thread crochet items, but I've never made anything that absolutely had to be starched. When I finish a doily, I just wet it and pin it and let it dry. Bookmarks...a light starch might be nice, but I never do it. Clothing...now imagine heavily starching that! LOL :bigsmile
