thanks for the link to the books i have been over paying for the ones i have picked up. i will look here first.

:yay I'm glad I could help out, I'll try to come back and post the ISBN #'s since that's a more universal way to find the book, especially because I don't read/know Japanese and I have no idea what the real titles of those books are :hook

I haven't even seen any Japanese crochet books locally, but I used to buy Magic Crochet and Decorative Crochet, which were French published. I loved the diagrams and began using them for my own designs, or for American patterns. It's much easier to follow than the squished instructions jammed together with very little white space in between, the style typical of patterns published in American magazines.

BTW, does anyone know if Magic Crochet or Decorative Crochet are still published? I haven't seen any issues in the stores for years.

rina, I just ordered this motif book off of yesasia last night! I'm so frickin' excited to get it! I went on a little bit of a shopping spree last night and bought myself probably too many books :2blush- I'll share with you here what I got, just don't tell DH!:wink

I got:

the beautiful dessert one

super cute amigurumi numero uno

super cute amigurumi numero dos

magic scrubbers I'm dying to try out :hook

and some felt mascots that I had to try out

I'm so excited for you! And I'm :droolover that motif book. When I went to SF on Thursday I got a 200 motifs book, I love it. For the more complicated motifs it shows how to join them. (I'll put up some pics on my blog in a few days and post a link here.) But the 300 motif book you ordered looks even better. Also picked up a little book on hats, mostly because it has some construction techniques that are new to me plus a fedora pattern. This is getting to be a dangerous habit....

FrenchLace, I've never seen French pattern mags but they sound pretty cool.

Alas, Magic and Decorative Crochet no longer exist as separate publications. For over a year now, I have received "Crochet Monthly with Decorative (or Magic) Crochet" each month. Crochet Monthly is a British version of the two publications, much thinner. The magazines, though publishing different patterns each issue, published the same patterns over the years. Recently, the Magic Crochet combinations have stopped, perhaps my MC subscription ran out. The latest Decorative Crochet combination had about a dozen patterns, most of which I already had in earlier magazines. Long before publication stopped, though, the magazines disappeared from the local magazine racks. If you examine the fine print in the earliest of these magazines, you will find acknowlegement of "borrowing" from Japanese publications.

Through my subscriptions and diligence on eBay, I have a nearly complete collection of the magazines. If you want to troll eBay for symbol patterns, look for Sabrina and Diana publications. They will be French, German, or British, and use a slightly different form of symbols, but the patterns are still very readable.

Dragonfly, I don't think the diagrams are hard to follow at all! most of the books have a section showing you what the stitch is.

I am an addict to the craft books and am diligently working my way thru all of them that I own.

Here are the symbles that most of my books basically follow; these are US terms

X = single crochet

V = increase, or if its upside down a decrease

T = half double crochet

T- = this is a T with the slash thru it, double crochet

T -- = this is a T with 2 slashs thru it, treble crochet,

and so on

. = slip stitch

0 = chain, more 0's equal amount of chains.

I also recently ordered from yesasia.com they take paypal. And the books I ordered seem to be cute, and cheaper then what I paid for 1 on ebay or etsy. Of course I now have to wait almost a whole month, I currently have these books

LOVE THEM ALL, the first one with the desserts has different symbols but still easy to figure out. the scrubby book makes the most adorable little guys I can't stand them they are too cute. Is anyone wants the ISBN numbers you can PM me and I can give them you. You can enter the ISBN numbers on YESasia.com and see if they have them in stock. its much easier to search for books that way.

Got two more! :woo

ISBN 978-4-529-04296-3. A hat book with 18 really cute patterns, mostly crochet, a couple knit. I would wear most of them, :manyheart :I'm really eager to try the hats posted on my blog.

ISBN 4-529-04233-2. 300 motifs/edgings book. Really gorgeous. :drool I like the fact that it shows how the motif look sewn together, and where to connect them.

Here's the same book that Chiti recommended however it's $24.99 (Buy It Now). I'm posting it is because it has a great description of the book and beautiful pictures.

When doing a search for 'Hello Kitty' patterns, don't forget to add 'Sanrio' to the search box. Sanrio is the brand name for 'Hello Kitty'.

That's great! I wonder why? Now I have to go look through what she has and see if I can convince DH that spending a little of our tax return on crochet would be a good thing! :hook

I think you really need to convince him you need to buy a japanese crochet book! I would go small at first, etsy seller saucylouise has a super cute scrubby book for $5.00 (has a little girl and mom on the cover) . I have it and paid over 3 times that for it. But I do love it. I made several little animals from the book..... Wow don't I sound like a pusher or something? My friends say I am addicted to crocheting and now tanning, since I am always trying to get them to do both!

I ordered two of Nihon-Vogue "Let's Knit" series books: #9-Crochet for Spring/Summer and #15-Beautiful Crochet and they just arrived. Wonderful diagrams and patterns. There are 23 patterns in one, and 30 in the other. I ordered them through a Japanese bookstore in L.A. http://www.sasugabooks.com/

here's a link to one of them that is being sold on ebay - with pictures of some of the tops and sweaters:

The listings looks great, when I go to the link they say they're in Mass., do they have multiple stores?

By the way, I finally got everything from my yesasia order! The motif book and desserts one got shipped to FL for some reason, so I had gotten the other 4 in the mail two weeks ago, and finally the other two yesterday- I was ready to kiss the mailman when he brought them to me!:manyheart I can't wait to try some of the patterns out! Someday, I'll actually get around to having time to do that! :hook
