Great Wheel

DH is such a doll. He found a Great Wheel for me for Christmas!

 

Christmas morning, it was sitting next to my 'new' wood cookstove ... a keeper if ever there was one!

Had the fiber guild over last night. One of the members brought her mother of all from her Great Wheel (one of the leather bearings on mine needs to be replaced).

 

We all took a turn spinning raw alpaca on the great wheel!!

 

I really need to practice my long draw! (and remember to keep stepping back to draft)

when I was younger me and my family used to take part in re enactments of the Tudor times, I was taught to spin on a great wheel,I had to stand to use it, but much prefered the ones you can sit down at, I remember that once, a school party that was visiting the event was told by the teacher that the "string" (of coarse it was wool) was going all the way round the wheel!( I then had to point out that that was the drive belt! doh!) and showed the children were the spun wool really was! she blushed and moved the children on to the next demonstration.....oh well, I hope that she went home and researched the wheel! how lucky you are to own such a thing!
