Blue Star Afghan CAL

Julie B, I haven't backed one with fabric - yet. I was going to do that with the baby ghan I'm nearly done with, since it's done from a graph and I may not be thrilled with the back side once I finish weaving in the ends. I was going to buy fabric, wash it, blindstitch it to the back - but use thread to stitch it to the body of the ghan in various spots (w/out letting the thread pop through to the front).

Clear as mud??

BTW - I love your color choices!

Julie B - That sounds like a great idea. I think this ghan would be a great wall-hanging. I don't sew (except for whipstitching granny squares together) so I don't really understand how it would work - but it sounds like you and Judy both have a good handle on how to make it work. By the way, I think your colors sound wonderful.

I'm really glad to be back working on my blue star again. I had some major frustration because I insisted on altering the pattern a bit - and I'm sure there's more to come later, but I really think it will be worth it when it's all finished. Right now I still have a ways to go on the block-wedge-block units.

  • 4 weeks later...

NOOOO... not page 3!!! I'm just starting on mine!

Come back!!!! :cry :cry :cry

It's just too hot to work on my Scrumptuous scraps ghans, and it's time to start this little WIM. I figure I'll crank out the 9 patches on hot days, that way I won't mind not making much progress- the smaller the better!

Is anyone else around?

Blue Star afghan is also my WIP. It's all frogged, ready to be used as scraps. I would like to try it in thread when I am ready to re-do it. There are many people here who are available for any help. :)

Krystal- I'm so glad you popped in! I am interested (but not yet invested) in doing your king sized version. Of course, I just started the center square of my fist 9patch, so we'll see! I just never really liked the look of the half granny, and my king sized bed needs somethin' purty.

Diane- I LOVE the idea of this pattern in thread- do you have colors chosen yet? I briefly considerd doing it in doubled #10 with a C hook, but my boring bed talked me out of it.

I went yarn shopping today and came home with something different than what I went for. I found RHSS Woodsy, Aran, Cornmeal, Med Thyme, and Coffee. Some Frosty Green might sneak in there somewhere to tie in more light green, but we will see.

I'm off to get a nine patch or two done tonight! :clap

Will do!

One thing that concerns me about usinf the Woodsy is that the color changes in it are both far apart and extreme. I bought tons extra so that I can do the "chop" suggested in the pattern if it drives me too nuts. Since I'm making this for me I want to be happy with it!

If you DO the chop as suggested, you'll be the only one.

I haven't seen woodsy in a while. Maybe you could use something like a Painted Desert in the lighter color variegated areas. If I remember correctly, woodsy has a lot of the same colors?

As long as it "matches", I don't think anyone would be the wiser.

K- nope, the painted desert isn't doin' it fer me. I really really love PD, and I', planning on using it in another ghan. It just doesn't work with the frosty green and cornmeal (your fav!) colors I already had in the room. Woodsy has dk brown, dk green, lt green, a medium terra cotta color (yum!) and aran.

I just pulled a bunch out of the skein and it isn't as bad as I had feared. I'll do up few and see.

OK, my post was eaten! I'll try again.

The Woodsy moves from Dk brown, med terra cotta (yum!),warm beige, Lt green, dk green. The cool blues and burgundy in the painted desert just don't work with it. Now that I pulled the yarn out of the skein the spacing isn't as bad as I had feared.

I really love the painted desert, but I have other plans for that little gem. Speaking of which, your star (eek! I can't think of what it's called!) is gorgeous. The one with the PD in join as you go diamonds? I've had that pattern for ages and haven't gotten around to it. I may have to copy your colors!

No, I didnt choose the colors yet. It's hard to find right varigated thread that can go with four solid colors thread. Double threads with hook c sounds ideal. I was going to try size 10 on 9 patch and see how small it will be.

Micheal's, Wallmart and Joanne's don't have many variety when it come to threads. Soon, I would check one local LYS as I recall the store have a big collection of DMC there. The store provides some needlepoint products.

Athba - Color choices look so wonderful. Go for it! It reminds me of rainbow shebert ice cream or warm desert colors in southwest US.

Athba- those colors are gorgeous! I just have one concern... is Julie Kay gonna bring out her bat because you violated your UFO pact?? <Julie B runs screaming from the building>

Diane- I can't wait to see what you come up with! My variegated only has three of the other colors in it, and the fourth just looks ok with it. You could always do it in the suggested blues!

I'm gonna go upload a pic of my square now. Wish me luck!

Well here it is- the first square! It is RHSS Aran, Med Thyme, Woodsy, and coffee. The yellow is Cornmeal, and will be my MC. I think the terra cotta shade in the Woodsy would be an ideal MC but 1) I really want yellow in there and 2) I couldn't find any! I don't think they make one. I'm really going out on a limb, but I figure I can always chicken out and change the yellow if I don't like it once I make the border. This girl ain't afraid to frog!

Oh good grief- I knew I was slow, but this is nuts. It is taking me TWO HOURS to do a block if I count weaving and edging. PLEASE tell me I'm not the slowest ever! I have noticed that the medium thyme is very thick and stiff so that I'm constantly ootching clusters, which doesn't help. But yeesh!
