fulling and felting

What is the difference between fulling and felting? I have read about felting,,,,seen felted items, and just recently hear talk about fulling.

Felting is just the first part of the process of the entire process of felting, called soft felt. Sometimes you stop at soft felt because that's the look you want. Often you continue to work the fibers until you get hard felt and that is called fulling.

 

It's likely with knit and crochet felting you are only doing a soft or medium felting and not reaching a fulled piece. When felting with fleece batts you really need to agitate it to get a truly fulled piece of wool/felt.

 

A great book for felting with wool is The Art of Felt Making by Anne Einset Vickrey.

How it was explained on here before (so I may be very wrong) is felting is what you do to raw wool, fulling is what we do to crocheted or knitted pieces.
