How do you read a new pattern?

I generally skim through them to be sure it's something I think I can do but I have been know to buy on ebay where you can't really check out the pattern first.

Ewww....I didn't read through once, and it broke me of it thereafter. I was making a tissue box cover from Annie's Attic. It was a chicken sitting on top of a nest. All was well in the chicken-making-world:h5 til I got to the nest part. I had to cut THOUSANDS of 4 inch (or so) pieces of yarn and tie them into EVERY STITCH ON THE TOP HALF OF THAT TISSUE COVER!!! I'll never start another pattern again without at least knowing what I'm getting in to!

I think I would have gone straight to loop stitch on that one. I am not known for patience
