Seeking blanket pattern for toddler

MorMonsen

Question

When I finish the baby blanket I am working on for the baby I'm expecting in February, I want to make my 18-month old son a blanket too.

But being very new to crocheting (the baby blanket is my first large project) I would be happy for some help locating a nice pattern (freebie or leaflet to buy). I want it to be thick and cozy, large enough for him to use for years and with two or more colors.

If you suggest a leaflet to buy please keep in mind that I am in Norway and need to buy it online so if you know where I can get it I would be happy :bounce

Thank you!

Eva

at this site you will find it all links are in catagories..

Both these sites I think are the best to keep bookmarked because you will always find what you need on them..

When My oldest boy was about 18 months I made him a blanket. I didn't have a pattern but I made him a checkerboard looking blanket using a single crochet stitch, and bold bright colors of red, yellow, green, blue and purple. I made it in strips. What I did was to get some graph paper and some color pencils and graph out the color blocks, The center was alternating blocks of green and blue with a purple border around each block of color the outside was a border of alternating red and yellow blocks also with purple borders around each and then a single crochet purple edge. It was large enough to cover his toddler bed. I have a pattern in an old magazine of something similar that has letters of the alphabet crocheted into the squares using a puff stitch. You could just as easily cross stitch the letters onto the blocks, The basic pattern is:

Strip 1: With Yellow ch21, in second ch from hook single crochet in each ch across(20 sc's) repeat for 20 rows, then 1 row of purple the 20 rows of red(repeat until you have 4 yellow blocks and 4 red blocks alternated)

Strip 2: same as first only the color pattern is 1 block red, 1 row purple, 1 block green, 1 row purple,1block blue,1 block green, 1 row purple,1block blue,1 block green, 1 row purple,1block blue, 1 row purple, 1 block yellow

Strip 3 color pattern: 1 block yellow, 1 row purple, 1 block blue, 1 row purple, 1 block green,1 block blue, 1 row purple, 1 block green,1 block blue, 1 row purple, 1 block green, 1 block red.

Strips 4 & 5: repeat strips 3 & 4

Strip 6 color pattern: 1 block red, 1 row purple, 1 block yellow,1 block red, 1 row purple, 1 block yellow,1 block red, 1 row purple, 1 block yellow,1 block red, 1 row purple, 1 block yellow.

Finishing: single crochet 1 row purple around each strip, lay strips out in their pattern and with right sideds facing slip stitch the 1st strip to the second, and so on until all strips are joined, then single crochet 1 round purple around the entire blanket and fasten off and weave in any ends. Hope this gives you an idea. Sonny

Sonny, that sounds adorable! do you have a picture? <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/photos.gif" />

Here's one that sounds much like the one Sonny did. Looks simple enough. And you can let him choose the colors!!! <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/veryhappy.gif" />

Pfirsch, I have looked at all the links and downloaded most of them. Several good ones there. I have yet to go through all the links at the CPC and Bev's :))

Cathey, Thank you for the links, they are duly bookmarked! I'm going through them little at the time. You might know who's buying the yarn for this blanket for me :lol

Sonny, thank you for sharing the pattern for your colorful checkerboard blanket you made for you son!!! I have printed it off :))

Deb, Thank you for the link :)

I have a lot to links to explore more and have gotten quite a few ideas on which blanket to make for my son. I think the problem now is to decide :rollin

I will keep you posted on my decision but thankfully I still have a way to go with the baby blanket so I don't have to decide today :))
