looking for a poncho...

JPorter718

Question

Hi all,

I'm going to a wedding in October and want to try my hand at a poncho.

I'm looking for something very open and airy, that can be worn with black pants, something that is fancy enough to wear to a wedding. I like the more open neck, even if it hangs off one shoulder, and the length to fall at or about the hips.

I found some cool black yarn (I forgot the name/brand) with some glitter of silver, that I'll probably use.

Can anybody help?

THANKS!

Hi Jayme.

How about using <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20001019060515/http://www.cei.net/~vchisam/groovy/pl-4.html" target="_new">this</a> pattern, only modified? Now.. I know that poncho doesn't LOOK like what you describing.. so hear me out! haha.

I am working on it right now, and I am loving how it looks. It's not as open as you might like, though. So what if you used the basic set-up (meaning the two rectangular panels that are stitched together once finished) but choose a stitch that you like (say from the 63-squares booklet)? Something more open and airy?

Lion Brand yarn put up some new poncho patterns this week. You might try <a href="http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/cjif.html" target="_new">this poncho</a>.

Hope this has helped. And good luck! <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/bounce012.gif" />

Deb, what are the measurements of each rectangle before sewing together? I like the concept of that poncho, but would really like an idea of how big they should be for what size poncho it will make.

And you are right, the basic concept will lend itself to just about any stitch, color combination, yarn type...... :))

What I did for a really easy rectangle poncho was this:

Lion brand Baby soft - sport - in black

K hook

Chain about 6 feet long

Triple crochet V stitch for about 3 feet

Fold in half and stitch closed from open end towards fold for about 18 inches. More if you like.

I added a row of single crochet around the neck to neaten it up a bit.

Sampler Lady:

I made my rectangles 15 inches wide... and about 34 inches long. It makes it asymetrical.. which I like just fine. :)h

Most patterns ask for the rectangles to be half as wide as they are long. (does that make sense?)

Good luck!
