santa hat size

I'd like to crochet a santa hat for myself but don't know how to tell if a certain pattern would fit my head. My head measures 24" around. I'm a male. Is this measurement about what would be medium for a man? Also, is there any difference between the head size for a man and the head size for a woman?

According to the Craft Yarn Council's standard sizing chart here, the average man's head is 22in around and the average woman's 20in. It might depend a bit on what yarn was being used for the Santa hat and how stretchy it is. . .

Thanks for the link. I downloaded the pdf so I'll have it handy whenever I need it.

 

I didn't realize it but according to the chart I've got a bigger head than other men. I wonder if this means that my brain is bigger also.

 

Now I have a better idea for when a hat pattern gives a size like medium what it means.
