UK Pattern says,

1 ch, *working into the back strand only of the 2 strand only of the 2 strands which form the top of the st, work 1 dc in next dc; rep from *, ending 1 dc in ch

 

what does this mean

It is a long way around telling you to work into the back loop only.

If you look at the top of the stitch it looks as though there are two loops, just work into the loop which is on the side away from you.

The part of the stitch which is not used, forms a ridge on the front of the work.
