Crochet Today

I just bought the first issue of the new crochet magazine. I really like it. It is very attractively done, and has a nice selection of patterns for almost every interest. The only negative for me was the yarns are kind of hard to obtain here, but they did tell you what you could substitute with. I think people will be willing to buy it. I have become more selective about the crochet magazines I buy, no longer buying them just for the sake of having the "current" issue.I was impressed by their stated attitude of "try something just a little more difficult then usual." That is something I almost never do, but now I am curious to see just how I would do. A little encouragement is never a bad thing. All the patterns are modern, nothing weird or ridiculous. I especially liked the quilt inspired throw and the cute baby bibs, although I don't crochet for babies as my "baby" (My grandson) is five years old. I may crochet them for young friends if blessed events come into their lives!

I was in Barnes & Noble today and while I was searching among tons of knitting mags for some on Crochet, a clerk came by with the new mag. I wound up buying it because it has a lot of patterns for flowers in it, and that is what I want to make in the next few weeks.

I did go ahead and buy a copy today. Now for my review. lol

I don't know where you are, so I want to let everyone know most of the projects are made with Red Heart (super saver to baby clouds to light and lofty). Also several Moda Dea stuff and a few thread projects, too. I don't want anyone thinking it's some hard to find speciality stuff.

I am too. I have seen so many on here stuck in that "I must do exactly as the pattern says" mode. It's okay to change the colors up.

Yes and no. A lot of them are old patterns (especially the afghans and the pillows) either redone in modern colors or given a modern flair.

I do like the cardi wrap on page 90. There was a thread about those on the "looking for" board a while back so anyone interested in them, should get this magazine.

I hope to make that for me for when I'm on my computer this winter. It get cold in here.

There three purses/bags, one for a little girl.

A couple of pillows.

About four afghans.

Two baby afghans, one is more of a mat, one is pineapple.

Two baby booties.

At least two hats.

A set of juggle balls, which are cute.

Two scarfs/neck warmers.

A bib.

A ruffled jacket for women (looks about s, m, and large). More of a sweater/cardigan.

A capelet. Some might like it, I don't.

A set of baskets that look more like desk (or crochet) organizers.

Edged napkins.

Amigurumi type dolls, more pet looking to me but still cute.

And the cardi wrap that has two ways to cuff your sleeves.

Plus a few articles, how tos, and the usual stuff.

Not a bad magazine really. Hopefully it'll get better and they'll keep publishing it.

The official release date is August 8, so it might not be available everywhere just yet. But obviously it is turning up already, so that's great.

Yes they are planning on publishing more issues, at this point it is scheduled to come out 6 times a year.

They will have at least one remake of a vintage pattern in every issue - that is slated to be a regular feature.

And the magazine is sponsored by Coats and Clark (in the same way that Lion Brand sponsors Knit.1), so the bulk of the patterns you see in the magazine will use those yarns.

The reason I know these things is that (as some of you know) I am a freelancer writer. Crochet Today is being put out by SoHo Publishing who puts out Yarn Market News, which I write for regularly.

I haven't seen it yet myself but am looking forward to it.

Any other reviews?

I know they are. However if it sucks and no one buys it, they'll stop. ;)

My point was the orginal posted stated yarns were hard to find. I wanted everyone to know what they are so they don't worry. ;)
