Alternitive materials

I just received a knitting book in the mail that uses some alternative materials to knit. One was netting (like wedding veil netting) cut into strips and the other was felt painted with fabric paint and then cut into strips. Now I have seen plastic shopping bags cut up and used like this but I was wondering if anyone has ever tried anything like this with crochet. I am planning on crocheting a rug made with cloth cut into strips. I just thought I would ask before buying everything and then finding they won't work.

i ahve done the fabric strips... the plastic bag strips and the netting.. all worked out fine .. i just tied them all together so i could have a continuous strand..

 

I have also crcheted hemp string ..

Have you looked at any of the rag rug crochet sites? There is lots help out there on how to prepare the cloth, what kinds of patterns work best, etc.

I've also used wire to crochet. String on beads, pick up two or three beads at a time with a single crochet and it makes a BEAUTIFUL purse.
