How do you hold your hook?

Recommended Posts

How do you hold your hook? I have been "hooking" since I was 12. I learned to knit first, so I hold my hook like a knitting needle. Anyone else hold it that way? I have seen others writing about "pencil" or "knife " hold. I don't think mine looks like either! <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/grouphug.gif" />

I've always been a pencil gal, but I'm slowly migrating to the knife hold. It's easier on my wrists. For me, the knife hold is a must with a big Q hook.

Holding it like you hold a knitting needle sounds pretty much like a <strike>pencil</strike> (Gah! I meant sounds like a knife hold. I need to pay more attention when I write.<img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/ohdear.gif" />) hold to me. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/scratchchin.gif" />

I am usually a *pencil* hold, but for the larger hooks I must hold *knife* style. For me the larger hooks are size N and up.

As for knitting, whether I knit continental or English style, the way I hold my needles would be considered the *knife* style.

Wow, lots of pencil holders here. I am a knife kind of gal. I recently tried to hold the hook like a pencil and it hurt my hand. I couldn't crochet nearly as fast either.

toothbrush or knife? hold ..my fingers are wrapped around the hook- that is why I love the longer brittany hooks, plenty of room for my 'paw' :lol I've tried the pencil hold, but never could get the hang of it.

I do things with both my right and left hands, due to my mother being a 'lefty'. Oddly enough, I can't crochet with my left hand...

I'm a right hander and I hold my hook like a knife. I didn't even know that there was another way to hold the hook until after I had been crocheting for several months. It looked awkward to me, but she said it was a little faster for her to hold her hook like a pencil, plus that's the way her grandmother has taught her.

Happy Crocheting to everyone
