Tell me about your first attempt at crocheting a sweater

I tell myself that when I complete a crocheted sweater AND wear it I'll be happy (with crochet)

I haven't attempted the dreaded sweater because:

A) I haven't found a pattern that is easy enough

B) I haven't found a pattern that is CUTE enough

C) and doesn't require 900 skeins of designer yarn only available through Ebay. YKWIM?

Tell me about your first crocheted sweater. Did you fine tune your skills before diving into your project? OR did you just dive right in and if your shaping skills were off so be it. Did you have an experienced crocheter at your side to help guide you?

one word: crap! i'll elaborate later

elizabeth - you're too funny - yes i do say that about socks, don't i :blush

my first attempt was that toddler hoodie freebie pattern by bernat. i believe it is just a difficult pattern to follow for a first time clothing attempt. i will be doing another attempt at a sweater for my mother soon. i'm sure it will go MUCH smoother.....

that hoodie still sits unfinished, btw.:frog

I used a pattern from a book called Great Crocheted Sweaters in a Weekend. It was very straightforward drop sleeve sweater, but I changed the basic pattern to one that I found in my stitch book and I changed the collar to a polo shirt-type neck with buttons.

It took less than three skeins of Red Heart Super Saver (poor college student that I was), but my dad loved it even though I can see all of my mistakes and the sleeves are too long.

If you're having doubts, try The World's Easiest Sweater using a stitch that you like. Can't go wrong, I say.

My first attempt at a sweater was the Toggle jacket (a cardigan sweater in my opinion) from an issue of Crochet! You can check the archives on my blog for more information.

My second attempt at a sweater was the Divine sweater for my daughter using Tunisian crochet. Again, you can check my blog for info or there's a thread around here in Current Projects that has some info.

I have another Divine sweater in the works, and a Homespun started, and another Homespun to do before Christmas.

I will say this, the Easy Tunisian sweater patterns are just that, EASY!

This sweater is the first one I made. Did two of them for my grandkids. It's easy and taught me the basics for a basic sweater. Both turned out well although because I didn't put in the design, they were kind of boring, but.... I've never done an adult sweater and probably won't as I don't like long long projects.

*rofl* Um yeah, sleeves were waaaaaay to long on the 1st sweater I made. Didn't have anyone mentoring me, so I just had to figure it out. Which is good, cause it helped me to learn the abreviations and terms faster. The pattern I used was I think a Red Heart pattern? andit was an v-stitch cardigan. It was the only sweater that didn't have drop sleeves. Its still one of my favorite patterns, but because its made in one piece and the sleeves are so stretch I always have to subtract 5 or 6 rows per sleeve.

What a coincidence! I just finished my first sweater (one other attempt was yucky, so I am not counting it). It was this one, from BHG.

Here's me in it.

I made it a little too big (maybe cuz I didn't measure myself), and I also used an L hook instead of a K (which I couldn't find). It was pretty easy, and can be made in about a week--less if you get to crochet for more than 2 hrs./day. The only part I got very confused about was sewing the pieces together. One of my sleeves is not turned inside out, but with homespun yarn it didn't matter--you still cannot see the seam (hurray!).

Michelle, that's a great sweater! It doesn't look too big at all - it looks comfy :))

Yarnentangled: Not that I've actually made a sweater yet, but this will probably be my first one when I get around to it: www.craftyarncouncil.com/...ochet.html I think it's really cute, it just takes worsted weight yarn, and the pattern claims it's easy. (I've been taken in by that before, though :lol )

my first attempt was a baby sweater and it came out fine. I have yet to crochet an adult sweater, dont know why. I crochet everything else!! I have knitted adult sweaters and they were pretty easy too. I have a book of patterns for crochet sweaters. I will have to try one. I'll let you know if it works!
