"Tagging" your work - signature

Recommended Posts

Does anyone out there "Tag" their projects? You know like some sort of signature to identify that you were the crafter?

My mom does counted cross stitch - she has NO idea how good she is, she did a currier and ives winter scene, it took like a year to do, and a bride in front of a mirror with beads and everything on the dress for my sister...took her longer to make than the marriage lasted...she's taken to making patterns on the computer out of pictures...she did my dog and both of my nephews and is currently working on a picture of her sisters daughter...anyway she always puts her initials and the year she completed the project at the bottom of her work...a little easier to do with thread on a canvas than with yarn.

So what do you all do to "sign" your projects?

That's interesting. I always would put initials and the year in my cross stitch or needlepoint, but never do I put a tag on my crochet items... and I really wonder how old some of them are now! I try to think of what was going on in my life during the time I was making something (I was pregnant with the third, or just moved into a certain house - whatever) but it's hard after a while. I've seen those little tags in Herrschners (I think) that say "Crocheted By" and then they print your name...

If she has any pic's of the projects I'll pass them along, I e-mailed her already to see if she has any pics. I'd actually be able to send you the one of my dog if I hadn't last the AC cord for my camera!:blush

If she doesn't have any pics, I just might take some when i go there next weekend, because she really should have some...she has NO clue how good she is.

a not so great pic of the Currier and Ives. Actually it doesn't begin to do her justice... But I walked mom through an upload to e-mail it to me...all by her self...the fact that it arrived at my house without my driving over to hers and sending it, was quite an accomplishment. I'll get more another time....actually It may be REALLY bad...I had to convert Tif to Jpg. either way, I'll try it again....or if you'd like I can e-mail it to you. :)

I use the bought ones that say "Made Especially For You By...." because I sew, embroider, knit, crochet, quilt etc. so I needed one that would cover it all.

Will do!!! She's actually quite excited :yay that there are people interested in her work. She wanted to know how to joint the forum, but I told her she might be better off looking for a cross stitch forum. I don't think a crochet forum would do her much good, since she hasn't crocheted since she was a child.

On the original topic however, My Aunt gave a nice suggestion. She suggested crocheting a simple little patch and stitching my initials and the year and then attaching it to my work...works well for afghans and maybe certain clothes I guess.

I always did backstitch my initials & the year on the bottom right hand corner of a finished cross-stitch piece...I just haven't gotten that ambitious to try and do that on my crochet yet LOL!! However, my mother has just told me that she's ordering some of those "Handmade By" labels cause she wants me to sell my crochet items....

I tried one of those tags "Handmade By" but I did not like that way it looked once I wrote my name on it. I used permanent marker and it bled, even though it was a fine point Sharpie.

Anyone have any better idead about what to use to write your name?

Yes, mom's quite good. I will definitely get more pics this weekend. I'll try to set it up so that I can upload a copy of the actual photo she used and the x-stitched version to compare. I'll even snap a shot of her WIP compared to the photo she is using. I will ask her if she's taking orders, but I'd guess probably not at the moment. too bad I didn't bring this up a couple of months ago when she was unemployed. She just started a full time job and she's been telling me how she hasn't touched this project in a while. Its her 11 y/o niece and she wants to send the project to her sister for Christmas. Initially she thought she'd finish that one AND planned to do one of her nephew as well, but she's concerned she might not even finish the niece at this point. I promise to share more pics.

I thought I saw somthing on Ebay where they do custom projects with a photo, but upon further review...they only convert it to a pattern for you...what a scam!:no

You can buy the personalized tags on the net. I have some that say "Hand Crocheted By Melissa" and they were really cheap too. I got like 25 for $15. you order them already personalized with your name on the tag, so no messy markers. they look like tags in store bought clothes. Here's a link to the place I got mine.

I've never used one, so I can't tell you how good they are, but there are pens specifically for quilters to write tags for their quilts. I've seen these pens in the quilting department of most craft stores. I'm sure you could use these on the tags as well.

I did try those tags where you write in your name too, and no matter how well I tried, those still looked too homemade, especially with the things I was trying to sell. Finally, I bought some of those premade tags. Hancock's has a limited selection of names availabe (Look where they sell sewing patterns) or you can order them online. I've used namemakers.com a few times, and they always send a few extra tags with my order.

For me, it depends on what the item is. For my quilts I tag my name the date started, and finished as well as how many hours it took me to finish. I do not sell my quilts and perhaps that is why they are tagged. Anything I sell at market is not tagged; a lot of people claim my sweaters, rugs, etc. as their own which who cares if I've been paid, and the tags would have to be included in the price which is excessive at around two dollars each. I have used mailing stickers which the customer can take off if they wish. Quilting pens work quite well but they do wash out after a while. With something like cross stitch I would put a tag or card in behind the work making sure that it could not bleed through onto the work.Afiling card would work with scotch tape over any printing. Put in some thing about the pattern yarns or threads used some"history" of the piece like when and why it was made, after all you are making an HEIRLOOM!!!!!!!!!!!! I restore and repair antique clothing and quilts and sometimes it would be really nice to know who made the piece. I often wonder because I can recognize the amount of love and creativity that has gone into each piece and future generations should know.

:( So when I started this reply I thought I'd be attaching some pics of moms work....i took some great pictures...but when I got the camera out of the bag it seems the cord that connects the camera to the computer is NOT in the bag and none of my USB connections are compatible.

I took a great pic of the courrier and ives, and another great pic of the WIP of my cousin, next to the picture she used to make the pattern....a few other pieces...and then the project of my dog and the pic that she used to make the pattern. unfortunately my sister doesn't live nearby, so the pictures of my nephews will have to be taken at another time.

Stay tuned...tomorrow I'll run over to moms and pic up the right cord so I can upload some great x-stitch. i'm sorry at what a project it turned into!
