Butterfly Wing Shawl

Butterfly Wing Shawl

Any yarn w/ appropriate sized hook

 

Shell = DC-ch1-DC-ch1-DC

You will be working from the top center of the shawl out.

 

 

Ch 8, slip stitch to end chain to form a circle.

 

Row 1- all stitches worked into circle, working over loose end of yarn.

Chain 4, DC, SC, *DC-ch1-DC-ch1-DC* ch 2, repeat* to *, SC, DC, ch 1 DC

Turn

 

Row 2

Ch 4, DC into first DC, SC into next DC, Shell (DC-ch1-DC-ch1-DC) into Sc,

SC into middle DC of shell from row 1,

*Shell-ch2-Shell* in ch 2 space

SC into middle DC of shell from row 1, shell in sc, SC in last DC

Dc-ch1-DC in 3rd ch of turning ch.

Turn

 

Row 3 & beyond

Ch 4, DC into first DC, SC into next DC

Shell (DC-ch1-DC-ch1-DC) into next Sc, SC into middle DC of shell from previous row

Repeat until you get to the ch 2 space at bottom point

*Shell-ch2-Shell* in ch 2 space

SC into middle DC of shell from previous row, shell in next sc

Repeat until you get to the half shell at the top point.

SC in last DC

Dc-ch1-DC in 3rd ch of turning ch.

Turn

 

Continue with row 3 pattern until shawl is the size you’d like it to be.

 

The important things to remember are that at the top points, you are creating only half a shell. The bottom point will always have the shell-ch2-shell repeat in the previous ch 2 space.

 

The top of this shawl curves up slightly, making it fit nicely around your neck and shoulders.

 

This will work with any yarn, use the appropriate sized hook for the yarn you choose. Try a chunky yarn with a large hook for a warm snuggly shawl, or a sport/lace weight yarn with a J hook for an airy, summery shawl

Chelle, the great thing is *any* yarn will work. You can make it dressy or something practical to snuggle up with at home.

The green one came from a giant cone I got from Fiber Options on Ebay, one shawl's worth probably cost 75 cents <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/laugh.gif" />

approximately how many balls of yarn or how many yards did this take?

For the multi-colored shawl I used a K hook and

2 skeins of Noro Blossom (77 yds ea)

4 skeins of Trendsetter Dune (90 yds ea)

5 skeins of Noro Silk Garden (109 yds ea)

Now remember, it is a very big shawl. It's 45 inches from the center of the back to the bottom point. I'm tall and...um...fluffy... <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/toothygrin.gif" /> and wanted it to be something I could really wrap up in. Someone short & skinny could get away with a lot less yarn.

The green shawl is much smaller. It is 32" from center back to bottom point and weights 9 oz. I used a 650 pp boucle, with a K hook on that as well. Feel free to do the math for yardage <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/sherlock.gif" />

thanks Holly.. I am fairly tall and fluffy too and i LOVE long shawls.. I just wanted an estimate in case i found some yarn some where and I really really really wanted it for this project .. i just needed an idea... what you put up there seems very reasonable to me...

 

i want some Noro.. my LYS has some.. that will have to be for a super special shawl though ..

I won some really beautiful koigu yarn for the Charlotte knit shawl, but ever since I saw this shawl I have been wanting to use it for that. It is more of a fingering/sock wt yarn so I would have to play with hook size and such but I think it could work. If you scroll down to Jan 26 you can see a picture of the yarn:

Popping in on this one late (but better than never!). I LOVE this shawl! I am thinking of trying it out with some laceweight yarn I got from knitpicks. It's definitely been added to my list. I love shawls! And I like this design, seems like it would fit better than a regular triangle. More visual interest too. Maybe by summer I'll be able to get to it, unless I really do start breaking Lily Chin's records, :eek2 !
