Crochet -a- Quilt

Recommended Posts

Good morning one and all -

I know I'll kick my own butt all over the street for doing this, but couldn't resist . My name is Julie and I have a Crochetalong Addiction .

There have been some people interested in doing a "quilt-inspired" afghan. There are many patterns out there to choose from. I think this would be lots of fun to see all the talent out there and see what each of you come up with to work on as far as patterns, colors, etc.

We could actually make some Blue-Ribbon Fair Winners here, ladies ! ( Or get a start on a nice Christmas gift )

^^^^^^^ And last but not least -- a big thanks to Jen for mentioning this site to me again . I totally forgot about it, but it is one of the neatest websites I've ever found. There are hundreds of quilt patterns on it -- if you had the talent, you could probably take any one of them and design a graph for a crocheted one !! ^^^^^^^^^^

Take a peak - you'll be here all day

http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore.html

That should give anyone ( unless you're Helen Keller) some temptation . Come on ladies -- This will be fun .

Have you been out there lurking for awhile, but never screwed up the courage to join a crochetalong ? Come on in .... you won't regret it .

( * Well, maybe you will -- you're gonna get so hooked on these danged things, you'll need a 12-step program to get off them )

Anyhow, ignore that last line .

ANYONE can make a granny square.

EVERYONE is welcome .

Jump in, the water's fine ! ( I DOUBLE-DOG DARE YOU ) :D

That pastel pinwheels is so pretty ! Would you make it for you or someone else ?

* By the way, can I ask what your first name is ? That makes us all sound a little bit more "chummy " . :)

What a coincidence! I am already working on the Around the World afghan. It's one of the 4 or 5 WIP's I have. I work on it casually, when I get tired of working on the Christmas gifts, and when it's finished, it's for me! The pattern is mindlessly simple, and a good portable project.

Good morning, Cindy !

Well, then ,you may as well just join us, that way you'll have someone to yak along with as you work on yours !

What colors are you using ?

I am using the SS brites with black squares between each round of colored squares . I don't know how many squares I have done -- I filled one large ziploc with them and am working on the second bag now .

Are you joining as you go, or are you gonna wait and join at the end when squares are all done ?

Stop it, stop it, STOP IT! :P Julie Kay, you're driving me crazy! ;) You come up with all these great, fantabulous ideas for CALs and I simply can't keep up with you, and I tell you, it's making me insane! I haven't even had time to start the 35 Grannies or Lace & Bobbles yet!

Seriously, you have such a wonderful drive for doing these CALs and I do think it's great. Just wish I could keep up with you. Do you crochet in your sleep? In the shower?:lol

Have fun everyone!:hug

Julie:

I wrote down what colors I'm using and how many squares of each color I need. So I crochet all of one color, then move on to the next color. When I get completely done with one color, I crochet a hexagon for another WIP I have going. This is a great project for long car trips!

Here are the colors I'm using:dark blue, claret, coral, mexicana, light sage, white/black speckled, dark sage, carrot, brown, teal, cornmeal, bright red, black, white, and a bright varigated.

Cindy

That is sure gonna be a pretty afghan ! Sounds like lots of pretty colors .

I should do that too, write down what I need of each color . I kinda graphed one out on graph paper, but really have no idea how big that would make it if I follow my graph . The squares I'm making are pretty small, only 2 rounds ,so it'll take a boatload of them . :lol

Julie-

I also graphed it out, and my squares are also 2 rounds each. It's a total of 421 squares. Working out from the center, this is the number you will need. Just substitute your colors for mine.

Bright varigated-1

white-4

black-8

bright red-12

cornmeal-16

teal-20

brown-24

carrot-28

dark sage-32

white/black speckled-36

light sage-40

mexicana-44

coral-48

claret-52

dark blue-56

It sounds like a lot, and it is, but just make them one at a time!

Hi Cindy-

Thanks -- I copied your list out and will put my colors in place then print it out and count out what I have done so far . Are you making the same pattern I am, the one in the Afghans magazine ?

How big is yours supposed to turn out using this many squares ?

Just a note -- in case we get some more posters this morning , I may be out of commission in little while. My grandson is here this morning , but still sleeping right now . Once he wakes up, I probably won't have a chance to get back on here til early this afternoon .

Just in case you all wondered where I went ~

Julie-

I have 159 squares done. I'm using the H hook and the squares are turning out to be 3 inches square. The pattern says it will be 56" square when it is finished.

It is from the afghans magazine; it's the same picture you posted earlier. This picture is what made me fork over $6.95 for a magazine. This afghan is on my "gotta make it before I die" list.

I feel like I'm :juggle juggling all these projects in my head. You are such an enabler.

But I did take a peek:ccompute at the patterns you posted :tired, and I guess I could get around to making the Nine-Patch in a year or two, if I don't go :loco first.

I can't decide :think if you are:goodorbad, Julie Kay! ;)

Cindy-

I'm with you -- I NEVER buy magazines and just happened to stumble across this one. That fuzzy fur shag thing on the front caught my attention at first, then when I opened it and saw the quilt afghan, I said who the heck CARES what it costs ? I want that pattern .

I'll have to sit and figure my squares out here today and see how many I have and how many I need of which colors. I am using ss and a G hook, so mine are probably a little smaller than yours . I havent measured them to see .

Will get back to you on it though !

Like a hole in the head!!!.......that's how badly I need to put something else on my ' to do ' list but this is there for sure, without a doublt. I've always loved the look of quilts but don't have the desire to sit and actually sew one.

When I saw......

Nine patch

This will be my next -

I fell in love.

I have a couple of small things to finish and then I'm in! I love this idea!

I KNEW I could talk you into it, Natasha . :D

My mom says I'd rather Talk than Eat ... WELL, I'd like to do BOTH , but talking is my greatest talent .

I'd like to think I could sell ice to an Eskimo . I'd sure try bullcrapping my way through it if I had the chance .

Anyhow, jump on in -- we'd love to have you . And don't wait 2 years ... do you know how many more CAL's I can start in 2 YEARS ? :lol

HEY LISA !!!

Great to see you. Yes, the 9 patch is gorgeous, isn't it ? I want to do one of those too .

Got any ideas on colors, or are you still thinking on it ?

Well, I tend to lean toward pinks or greens if I'm doing something for myself. The colors that it is made with is very pretty too. I'll have to look around and see what really catches my eye.

I'm making the 'sitting pretty dress' right now for my niece (well, actually my cousins daughter) so if I ever get it done (:sweat ), I'll pick out my colors for this.

Great idea!

I can't believe this. I had actually talked myself into not starting anymore projects until I finished some UFO's and you go and do this!

I love to quilt and I love to crochet. I just may have to join in on this one. All the patterns you listed are beautiful.

Could you please tell me how to sign up for one of these cals? I have a pattern that I bought ten years ago and never made it. It would be perfect for this. It's leisure Arts Leaflet 2431. Not sure what colors I would do yet. But thinking....

The greens and pinks sound great . I love green and pink is probably my 2nd favorite color, so it's bound to be pretty !

I'm sitting here waiting to see what pattern and colors you choose .
