There is no real way to know - grams is a weight measurement and of course yards is a length measurement. It all depends on how thick and heavy the fiber is. Now, you're talking about thread so we know it isn't terribly heavy. What brand and type is it? DMC Traditions, Cebelia, etc?

I know that Dmc has discontinued putting the yardage on their balls of thread. Who knows the logic behind that one? Not I. Before I lost this information I made me a file that I can refer to to know my yardage for a project. I took this off of balls of thread I had with the yardage still given. Hope this helps you.

DMC Cebelia Crochet Thread

3-cord, 50 gram ball, 100% crochet cotton Size 10 -284yds(259 m), Size 20-415 yds(379 m), Size 30-569 yds (520 m).
