I say - Go for it. I had never worked exclusively from a graph before either but I made this shawl for the Crochet Olympics and it was amazingly easy to follow the graph. I always lose my place in a narrative pattern. With the graph it was much easier to find my location and clearly see how the stitches formed the pattern.

I also prefer crochetting with a graph rather than with a narrative pattern. It's easier, you never loose your point. Try it! You'll never regret!
