Get To Know You - Crochet Questions - Part 1

Recommended Posts

First thing you ever crocheted?

I think it was some sort a shawl for my mom, I made it a long time ago. She just reminded me that she still has it.

Strangest place you have crocheted?

In the waiting room at the doctor's office.

Fave thing to make?

Shawls, because wearing one makes me feel feminine and sophisticated.

Do you do charity stuff? If so, what?

Haven't done anything yet, but will probably do so in the future.

Fave yarn?

Hand-painted wool from eBay from Over the Rainbow.

Fave hook? Size? Boyles or Bates?

G and H, Bates most of the time, but experimenting with Boye lately.

Hardest thing you ever crocheted?

Hats! Every time I tried to make one it would come out flat. After frogging several different patterns one finally came out right.

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you

Socks!:bang

First thing you ever crocheted?

A granny square afgan for my mom. I started it at the end of April and it's still in progress. (I'm a newbie.) All the squares are done and I'm working on the joins. I'm using a variation on the stitch that Chelle posted here in the "Joining Blocks" topic. Thanks Chelle! (It's a variation because I did it wrong on the first few squares and decided to be consistent.)

Strangest place you have crocheted?

On my ride to work I have one place where I sit at an intersection for several signal changes because the traffic backs up. I can usually get a row or two done while I'm waiting for my turn to go through the light.

Fave thing to make?

I don't really know yet. I'm still trying new things.

Do you do charity stuff? If so, what?

Preemie hats for Stitches from the Heart. I've done 4 so far.

Fave yarn?

The nicest thing I've worked with has been a 75% Wool 25% Mohair handspun I got on sale at the LYS. I was kind of winging it on the project and it didn't work out. I frogged the whole thing right down to the ball. I was OK with that because it means I get to work with the yarn again. In general I tend to prefer worsted weight yarn.

Fave hook? Size? Boyles or Bates?

My favorites are a Susan Bates H and a Hero J. Smaller hooks aggravate my carpal tunnel.

Hardest thing you ever crocheted?

Cotton worsted yarn. Sadly, I enthusiastically bought a whole bunch of it on sale for a project, then decided I hated working with it. It's hard to pull through stitches and splits no matter what size hook I use. I realize this question is more about the type of project than the type of yarn, but I haven't tried anything too complicated yet because I'm still a newbie.

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you?

Bloody gauge. I have yet to have a gauge swatch come out remotely correct no matter what yarn or hook combo I try. So far I just get frustrated and decide to wing it. Once it worked out ok, and once that bit me in the behind and I had frog the project (see "fave yarn" above).

Do you do charity stuff? If so, what?

Fave yarn?

I have never really worked with anything but the more inexpensive yarns you can get from Walmart or Hobby Lobby but recently discovered a somewhat local yarn shop and OMG!! The yarns in that place are unreal...so even tho I don't really have a favorite now, it would be subject to change soon anyway once I start spending money in there!

Fave hook? Size? Boyles or Bates?

Only have Boyles at this time

Hardest thing you ever crocheted?

hmm...I can't say that I really have made anything I would consider "hard"...some things have taken longer than others but I haven't really done anything I would consider hard just yet

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you?

not really yet, but I'm getting into some more difficult things these days and this is subject to change as well

Answer these questions:

First thing you ever crocheted? Large granny square (roughly a yard square). I was doing so well, I just kept going.

Strangest place you have crocheted? Twins baseball games. I could finish a dishcloth by the 7th inning (8th if I had a beer).

Fave thing to make? Afghans. I'm trying to branch out now as I'm reaching a point where everybody has enough afghans (suckers seem to last forever too since they're made from acrylics).

Do you do charity stuff? If so, what? Not anymore. Got tired of it. Made afghans for teenagers usually.

Fave yarn? As I only made afghans until recently, my favorite afghan making yarn was Sayelle. Planned projects will include using things such as boucle.

Fave hook? Size? Boyles or Bates? Boyles. I sold off or gave away anything with Bates.

Hardest thing you ever crocheted? Current project-63 Afghan squares. Most of these stitches are totally new to me (making project very interesting).

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you?

Trinity Stitch (so far). l know I will get it...but so far....:bang

First thing you ever crocheted?

A pretty shell pattern afghan. I worked on it forever, and when it was finished I tossed it into the washing machine, and the darned thing came unraveled in parts. it was the most awful mess. So I untangled the pile of knots, frogged the entire thing( 7 supersize skiens of yarn) and started over, this time paying close attention to joining and remade the whole thing. I still have it and 100's of washes later it has yet to come unraveled.:sweat

Strangest place you have crocheted?

While in the hospital, in labor with my youngest son had to put it down to push though.

Fave thing to make?

Sweaters, hair thingys, kitchen items, covers for the large glass candle jars so that they make pretty containers when the candle is gone and trying to figure out from memory this one teddy bear I made from a pattern and lost years ago. There is a whole slew of ugly teddy bears that I've given to my boys in my attempt to recreate that dumb thing.

Do you do charity stuff? If so, what?

Not so far

Fave yarn?

EVERYTHING at my local yarnshop, especially the hand dyed mohair yarn she has that is $69 a skien however my dh would turn purple and stop breathing if I spent that much on one skien of yarn,so I settle for whatever is pretty that I can buy from Walmart or Michaels or even the local thrift shop.

Fave hook? Size? Boyles or Bates?

boyles size H

Hardest thing you ever crocheted?

a fishermans crochet sweater, OMG I hated that blasted thing by the time I was finished with it, it was pretty but I couldn't stand the sight of it.

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you?

There's not much I can't figure out in time, Some of the variations of tunison threw me for awhile, thread crochet holds no appeal for me, the hooks smaller than f hurt my hands.

Fave hook? Size? Boyles or Bates? Boyles - Size K

Hardest thing you ever crocheted? - Still attempting an afghan that has long (I believe that's the term) DCs...looks like an elephants trunk...its not turning out as good as the pic!

Answer these questions:

First thing you ever crocheted? Baby Blanket -5th grade.. VERY crooked!

Strangest place you have crocheted? During lunch at my workplace cafeteria. I was with my sister once and she was wearing a hat and scarf set as i was crocheting something else... what better way to display your work!

Fave thing to make? SCARVES and beanie hats/round caps

Do you do charity stuff? If so, what? not yet... want to practice until i'm good enough to give my work away to strangers hee hee

Fave yarn? Soft, BIG yarn

Fave hook? Size? Boyles or Bates? Bates... but only because i've used them so often. Would probably try anything. Hook doesn't matter, as long as it fits comfortably in my hand. I think i like the metal ones rather than plastic because the weight is comforting. ^_^

Hardest thing you ever crocheted? Had to be trying to make a filet curtain from this really hard string yarn. it was corse and didn't want to fall nicely into place... it was old too, not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you? how people have the patience for a filet styled bedspread.. PATIENCE!! w00t!

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you? Probably Cro-Tat. I tried it, but couldn't get the hang of it :thinking1 I plan to try again when I have the time to learn, though

First thing you ever crocheted?

The first thing I ever finished was the curly-brimmed hat from the 70s edition of the Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Needlework. (I haven't been crocheting that long - I found that book in a used bookstore when I decided I wanted to learn to crochet.) I love that hat :) I even made another one later (which came out better since I'd gotten better at it, but I wear them both).

Strangest place you have crocheted?

Toss-up between out in the woods while camping or as a passenger for the entire trip from Ohio to Boston trying desperately to finish the afghan I'd been making as a wedding gift - I'd gotten behind and had to finish it up on the way and at my mom's house. It was finished the night before the wedding - just in time!

Fave thing to make?

That's hard to say, I guess. Probably baby blankets, I guess, because you get the gratification of an afghan without it taking so long to finish, and because they're such fun to give to new parents.

Do you do charity stuff? If so, what?

I haven't done a lot. I've done a few things for Touching Little Lives, but not lately.

Fave yarn?

For the price, Red Heart. For how pretty it works up, Bernat Baby Coordinates.

Fave hook? Size? Boye or Bates?

I have both Boye and Bates hooks and don't have a big preference between the two. I definitely like my metal hooks better than my plastic ones, though.

Hardest thing you ever crocheted?

Probably the hardest thing was a cable strip afghan that had these crossed double triple stitches - by the end of the afghan it wasn't hard anymore, but that first strip I frogged over and over and over again trying to get it right!

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you?

Reverse single crochet. I can't seem to get it right. Maybe it's because I'm left-handed? But I usually don't have trouble reversing stitch directions in my head - this is the only stitch I've tried that I just can't seem to do.

First thing you ever crocheted? Granny squares, I was helping my mother make hats with that motif.

Strangest place you have crocheted? No place strange, at work, in waiting rooms, on road trips, I can't just sit and do nothing.

Fave thing to make? Ponchos!

Do you do charity stuff? If so, what? I just made a couple of scarves for a United Way silent auction. They went for $25 each!

Fave yarn? Rayon Boucle yarn

Fave hook? Size? Boye or Bates? Susan Bates size I

Hardest thing you ever crocheted? A ragland sweater. It was fairly simple and I finished it in a couple of days, and afterwards, I hated my choice of yarn and never wore the sweater, it is still in my closet and I haven't attempted the pattern again since getting an easier method through MODULAR CROCHET.

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you? What in the world is gauge, I never check this! Some patterns intimidate me since reading patterns is sort of new for me.

First thing you ever crocheted? A purse, own design, lined it and everything...

Strangest place you have crocheted? probably a S.F. Giants game at Candlestick park back in the 80's.

Fave thing to make? probably afghans.

Do you do charity stuff? If so, what? Charity crocheting? Not yet...

Fave yarn? chenille

Fave hook? Size? Boye or Bates? Size Steel #10 and regular G

Boye or Bates? Huh?

Hardest thing you ever crocheted? More like "cause for pause" would be the Acorn Apron

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you? Only how the writers write up the patterns...makes me want to go back to making things up myself...but I'm working on it...

First thing you ever crocheted? My mom and I did a granny square afghan out of yellow, black and white using the black to spell out Steelers (For a Pittsburgh Steelers fan). The design was my idea, my mother did the bulk of the work since she was teaching me how to do everything. On my own, the first thing I made was a round coaster.

Strangest place you have crocheted? No where yet, although I have jury duty next month and will bring yarn and a hook if they allow it, otherwise I guess I will read.

Fave thing to make? Doilies!

Do you do charity stuff? If so, what? I haven't yet, but when I get my Christmas gift projects completed I plan to participate with Project Linus and might make some of those Cuddles blankies for animals at our local Humane Society where we got both of our dogs.

Fave yarn? Threads, not much experience with different kinds yet, but so far I'd say DMC Baroque.

Fave hook? Size? Boye or Bates? I've only used Boye, I will probably try out Bates (Birthday and Christmas coming up!) to see which I work with better.

Hardest thing you ever crocheted? The doily I just finished up was the hardest thing. I was basically teaching myself as I went and had to keep looking things up. Then when I finished it I realized I had been doing some things wrong. It looks really nice though and I will probably retry it at some point, it just took a long time to make heh.

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you I have to agree with most people on that Tunisian stitch, haven't even tried it yet cause it just looks complicated and I don't have the appropriate hooks.

First thing you ever crocheted?

I started a large lap afghan, unfortunately it has sortof gone by the wayside, though I still love it. I think it was a bit large to start with!

Strangest place you have crocheted?

Hmm, well, I don't think I've crocheted anywhere strange, I guess sitting out in the hall on the floor at college between classes.

Fave thing to make?

Scarves, they are more instant gratification, and they allow me to use lots of fun and more expensive yarns.

Do you do charity stuff? If so, what?

I've only done a hat for charity, I need to do more.

Fave yarn?

At the moment, baby alpaca

Fave hook? Size? Boye or Bates?

Turn-of-the-Century wood hooks, no question! I love the N hook.

Hardest thing you ever crocheted?

Hmm, I haven't really done anything hard as yet!

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you?

Not yet, but I'm relatively new and haven't tried anything difficult.

Answer these questions:

First thing you ever crocheted?

my first completed project is a lapghan/wrap, it's completely lopsided, has a couple of huge holes where I skipped stitches and didn't bother to go back to correct, and it's my favorite cuddle blankie :))

Strangest place you have crocheted?

I have an update to my "Getting to Know You" post that is several posts back...

Hooks Boye or Bates...

honey, I just got a whole set of Boye Steel hooks from JoAnn.com. Almost all my other hooks are Bates and they are fine...but my word Boye hooks are the best...I'm gonna have to find a set of the larger hooks past 00. Who knew that a hook could feel so good...The Bates hooks are fine, but Boye is like going from a Ford to a Mercedes...

First thing you ever crocheted?

A scarf for my daughter. It was the easiest project I could think of when I was first taught by a coworker.

Strangest place you have crocheted?

Allergy shot clinic while waiting the required 20 minutes to check for a systemic reaction.

Fave thing to make?

Anything Tunisian. It's great when working with yarns that are difficult to work up like fun fur or Patons Divine.

Do you do charity stuff? If so, what?

I haven't yet, but I plan to.

Fave yarn?

That all depends. I love Homespun, but any yarn that isn't Super Saver will fit the bill.

Fave hook? Size? Boye or Bates?

G, Boye

Hardest thing you ever crocheted?

The toggle jacket from an issue of Crochet! Magazine. The booger didn't come out to the right size for my daughter.

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you?

Nothing that comes to mind. I've taught myself plenty of new things after learning the basics from my coworker, and now she comes to me for help! LOL Filet, Tunisian, Crochet-nit... done it all.

Answer these questions:

First thing you ever crocheted?

Long, long chains until I learned how to make them uniform in size (thank you aunts!)....then I had to learn stitches. Then, I got graduate to granny square.

Strangest place you have crocheted?

Waiting for an emergency mammogram....they thought I was nuts.......it calmed it down. :)

Fave thing to make?

I don't have a favorite and that's my problem! I usually have at least 3 projects going at a time because I get so excited over a new pattern and I do bore easily, so......

Do you do charity stuff? If so, what?

No, but I'd like to. I do give away a lot of stuff to kids I know who need hats and scarves that their parents can't afford. I love to give to the kiddies.

Fave yarn?

I love the eyelash and novelty yarns.

Fave hook? Size? Boye or Bates?

Boye

Hardest thing you ever crocheted?

The last afghan I made. The body was easy.....but the heart motifs that you attach were a PAIN!!!!!!!!!!!! I kept giving up and getting mad and going back to the pattern and cursing and fuming! LOL I did not give up and it finally made sense. I always say, "When you get that frustrated....walk away, because when you worry over it you make it hard.....when you don't think about it....it becomes clear out of the blue." It's true, too.

Is there anything about crochet that completely stumps you?

Some of those old patterns that uses the charts..like "o" means this and "/" means that! I think I'm just too impatient!
