Felted Bag Pattern

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where I can find a pattern for a crochet bag? I'm thinking like a tote bag type bag. :)

I bought Marlo's patterns a week or two ago. My plan is to dye my yarn tomorrow if it rains - we may go shopping if it doesn't. After I finish the pineapple afghan then I'll make my bag. I just have to decide which one I want, I bought all three of Marlo's patterns!

This is just what I have been wanting to do..went to all the knit shops and drooled then none knew how to crochet one. Went to kitty.com and they didn't either and that brought me here. Wow:jump

I can't wait to see how this turns out. What kind of yarn are you using and how many skiens?

Okay - all done. I used LionBrand's Fisherman's Wool. It's 8oz to a skein and 100% wool. The pattern that I think I'll use calls for 16 oz of yarn, but I bought three skeins just to be sure. I just wrote about it and posted pictures in my blog. It's really easy!

Thank you thank you thank to Marlo, if you buy her patterns she explains how to dye the yarn.

Don't be nervous about felting; it's awesome! Ok. Granted, I haven't felted a crochet project yet, but I have felted a bag I knit, and I love it (and get tons of compliments on it, too), and I definitely plan to make a pattern purchase from Marlo soon.

First, use 100% wool, and make sure it's not superwash (or it won't felt at all). Make sure you follow the pattern, as you'll want to crochet it to be quite a bit larger than the final result will be after felting.

To felt: Make sure you've secured your ends well. Toss the project in the washing machine along with a pair of jeans (for agitation). Use a bit of detergent, and warm water (I believe it's warm water). Check on it periodically throughout the wash, to make sure it doesn't felt too much for your liking. If, at the end, you still want to shrink it more, put it in for another cycle.

When you're happy with the size, definitely block it. For my bag, I put a couple of cereal boxes into it and let it dry overnight. It still has a great shape to it (a year later).

Kim,

I'd love to make one using Lion Brand fishermen yarn. I don't want to dye it though...Because it will be a light color, I might need to clean it often. Can I wash a felted bag? And let it dry on a towel?

Hi Margaret,

You know, I haven't even considered it. I bet you can, since all you do to felt it in the first place is wash it. The only problem would be if it shrinks even more when you wash it. I'm not familiar with how the Lion Brand yarn felts. I know that for my bag, I pretty much felted it down as much as it would go, so I'm confident that I could just toss it in the machine and not worry about it shrinking any more.

I know that Knitty has an article on felting somewhere in its archives. I'd check that out for more information.

Keep us posted on how it goes!

Kim

i would think that like any 100% wool item, you can either wash it by hand in cold water or have it dry cleaned to prevent further felting.

I hadn't heard of a felted bag before I saw it on this site. But yesterday I was talking with a friend who crochets (and knits!) and she had some knitted felted bags! They are so neat!

I think I'm going to order a Marlo bag. I can't make up my mind between the bucket bag or the rectangle bag. I might have to get both! :clap
