I have just finished a baby crochet granny square blanket for a friend I would like to add a tie blanket to back, what is the best way to go about this

Welcome!  Sorry, I didn't see this sooner.  I'm not of the opinion that a crochet blanket needs a lining, but I know a lot of people seem to think so.  You mentioned 'tie blanket', and the way you would "tie quilt' a fabric quilt together should work. There are a lot of tutorials on the internet on how to do this, really just cut lengths of yarn and make a stitch connecting the 2 pieces, and tie it off securely, leave the ends.  

Google 'how to tie a quilt with yarn' and you will find a lot of videos and instructions on how to do this.
