I am crocheting's  slippers I chain 30 , turn single crochet 1st row , half dbl crochet 2nd row, I go back to single crochet, then half double. After maybe the 6th row, it starts to become less in the width. Do you know what I am doing wrong?

Not sure from your description but is this one of the patterns where you are making a square or rectangle.  If so it sounds like you are losing or inadvertantly making decreases.  It is very important to count stitches for each row.  You might be having issues on where you make the first and or last stitches for each row.
