Welcome to the 'ville!  Unfortunately, if you don't know the name of the pattern and publisher, there isn't much that we can do.  I'm sure we could find a bunch of patterns that you think looks close, but it is highly unlikely we'll find the right one to be the same so the work you've already done won't work.   

Steady, take a deep breath -- rip out the work you did decades ago and find another pattern.  Describe what you are looking for, and we can try to help--style of sweater (pullover? cardigan?), and weight of the yarn you were working with.

Also - do you remember if you bought all the yardage you needed to make the pattern back then?  Because the likelihood that you'll find the same color is very slim, and finding the same die lot is zero.  If you don't, you might think of incorporating stripes or color blocks of a contrasting color.

I found a couple of baby items that fit your description but the above is all I found for adult sizes (that were free)
