Has anyone tried doing filet crochet with shorter stitches?

I wonder if it would be possible to use sc or hdc stitches instead of dc stitches for more detailed work at a smaller scale. Has anyone tried this?

You could try some swatches, but, it would no longer be Filet Crochet. And even with hdc, you would not get the open look as with dc. Sc would be considered the Moss stitch. If you're looking for a finer texture, use smaller weight thread and a smaller hook such as #20 or #30 thread.
