Straight Seam with Amigurumi

Hey y'all, I'm doing an amigurumi project and I'm having issues keeping my seams straight. They keep spiraling. The pattern calls for you to join, chain 1 and start in the next stitch. Any tips on getting my seams to stay straight?

That is normal. Many amis are worked in a spiral instead of joining each round to avoid that spiraling seam.  There are workarounds.
