Welcome to the 'ville!

It sounds like an "X" stitch, which is a decorative stitch.  Usually though, it would say to make the second DC in front of, or behind, the first stitch.  If you look at the pattern photo, does it look like there are stitches that look like they are crossed like that?

There are lots of tutorials, here is one that chains 1 and skips a stitch between X stitches so their construction is really clear.  You can see the second stitch (the one on the left, assuming right handed crocheter working right to left) is made over the first one.
