Walls of basket

Nicolapen

Question

pattern says Rounds 6-12 (sides of basket) DC into each stitch in the round. I think I have done this but would the V shapes on outside be more pronounced if I did waistcoat stitch.

Pattern worked in a continuous spiral.

Picture 1 outside

Picture 2 inside

This my first attempt at crochet

I think your piece looks great, and I didn't realize, or forgot, that this was your first project - well done!  And it looks exactly the way a UK DC is supposed to look.

Waistcoat stitch does look more like knit stockinette if that is the look you are going for.  It's like UK DC except you insert your hook lower into the 'guts' of the stitch to make your next stitch, so you are covering up more of the stitch you are hooking into with the loop that was on your hook, which makes the v on the front face of the stitch.  Here's a  video of a basket pattern, I didn't look past the 'cover' of the video but it looks like the top edge is done in reverse UK DC, which is a nice edge but a little mind bending for the first few stitches because you are working backwards (left to right).
