Help with basket pattern please

Just done 30 stitches to complete base. Next round starting to shape sides of basket. Pattern says

Round 5: working in the back loop only for this round - bldc in each st (30st) 

I thought if I did a dc in the back loop of every stitch I would be doing 60 not 30 stitches. 

Where am I going wrong?

If you make 1 bldc in each of 30 stitches you will only be making 30 stitches.  You may be confusing this with beginning to make an oval shape where you crochet down one side of a starting chain and then back the other side of the chain.

More often in my experience patterns will say  DC BLO (back loop only).

Using a back loop to 'turn a corner' in a 3D thing, like transitioning from the bottom of the basket to the sides, leaves a ridge on the front side (the unused loop) which is sort of decorative, but I think also helps/encourages the fabric to fold/change direction at that point.
