Assistance with increase !

Nadmars

Question

Good evening,

here’s hoping someone can help! I am currently making a cat sweater and the pattern asks me exactly this :

ch 2, (dc 3, inc) around, join with sl st.

this step is said to take me from 40 stitches around to 50.

I believe I am understanding it incorrectly - does this mean to double crochet in the same stitch 3 times to increase ? I feel like this will take me well beyond the 50 stitch total !

any help is appreciated !!!!

If a pattern says 'DC 3', and doesn't specifically say where, it means 'put 1 DC into each of the next 3 sts'

So (DC 3, inc) around will turn 4 stitches into 5.  [1 DC in stitch 1, 1 DC in stitch 2, 1 DC in stitch 3, 2 DC in stitch 4]  ...which fits in with the 40 stitches becoming 50.
