Armhole shaping in moss stitch going from even to odd number of stitches

Saba

Question

BACK
Note:  Each sc and ch-1 space counts as 1 st.

With crochet hook, ch 71(81-91-101-111-121).

Row 1 (RS):  Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 70(80-90-100-110-120) sc’s.  Turn.

Row 2:  Ch 2 (counts as 1 sc and ch 1), skip 1st sc, sc in next sc, * ch 1, skip next sc, sc in next sc, rep from * across – 70(80-90-100-110-120) sts. Turn.

Row 3:  Ch 2 (counts as 1 sc and ch 1), skip 1st sc, sc in next ch-1 space, * ch 1, skip next sc, sc in next ch-1 space, rep from * across, end sc in 2nd ch of beg ch-2.  Turn.  Row 3 forms body pat.  Rep Row 3 three times more.

Row 7 (Inc Row):  Ch 2 (counts as 1 sc and ch 1), (sc, ch 1, sc, ch 1) all in first ch-1 space, skip next sc, scin next ch-1 space, * ch 1, skip 1 sc, sc in next ch-1space, rep from * to last ch-1 space, (sc, ch 1, sc, ch 1) all in last ch-1 space, sc in 2nd ch of beg ch-2 –74(84-94-104-114-124) sts. Turn.

Rows 8, 9 and 10:  Rep Row 3.

Row 11 (Inc Row):  Rep Row 7 – 78(88-98-108-118-128) sts.

Row 12:  Rep Row 3.

Row 13 (Inc Row):  Rep Row 7 – 82(92-102-112-122-132) sts.

Rows 14, 15, 16 and 17:  Rep Row 3.

Row 17 (Inc Row):  Rep Row 7 – 82(92-102-112-122-132) sts.

Shape Armholes:  Row 18:  Ch 1, sl st in 1st 3(5-7-8-10-12) sts, rep Row 3 to end – 79(87-95-104-112-120) sts.

Row 19:  Rep Row 18 – 76(82-88-96-102-108) sts.
I'm working the second size and at the end of Row 18 I have an odd number of stitches so the pattern doesn't work out. The last 3 sizes end on even number. When it says Rep Row 3 does it mean from beginning ch2 or from * I have tried various combinations on a small swatch of 20 stitches.

Do you think this is a mistake? How many stitches do I need to start Row 20?

Row 20 (Dec Row):  Ch 1, pull up a loop in 1st sc and in next ch-1 space, yo and pull through all loops on hook (dec made), rep Row 3 to end – 75(81-87-95-101-107) sts.  Rep this dec row 11(17-19-21-21-23) times more – 64(64-68-74-80-84) sts.  Work even until armholes measure 6 1/2(7-7 1/2-8-8 1/2-9)”.

Thanks for taking the time to read and share your thoughts.

Just repeating the instruction so I don't have to scroll--

Row 17 ends with  82(92-102-112-122-132) sts.

Row 18:  Ch 1, sl st in 1st 3(5-7-8-10-12) sts, rep Row 3 to end – 79(87-95-104-112-120) sts.        Row 19:  Rep Row 18 – 76(82-88-96-102-108) sts.

The first 3 sizes have you slip stitch across an odd number, and end in an odd number; the second 3 sizes slip across an even number, and end with an even number.

Row 17, you should have 92 stitches to work row 18 into.  The armhole row, you slst across 5, and work to the end.  92 minus 5 is 87, check.

Row 18, you start with 87, slst across the first 5, and work across the remaining stitches.  87 minus 5 is 82, which matches the pattern.  Or another way to look at it, row 17 you had 92 stitches, then over the following 2 rows you deleted a total of 10 stitches (5 stitches x 2 rows) to end up with 82 stitches.

So the pattern is not wrong; the only thing that occurs to me is that this particular stitch pattern is simple, but has a quirk; you can't start or end a row with a chain floating in the air, so at the ends (or beginnings) of rows sometimes (like when you have to shape something, like an armhole) you have to sub a SC for a chain, so at row ends you might have 2 SC in a row before you can resume the pattern.

Thank you so much! - that makes sense. I will try that and let you know. Exactly - you explain it better I had a chain floating in the air! And yes the maths worked out just not my stitches!
