If you decide to make one for yourself (or your hubby) instead of cross stitching the flowers on maybe you could just single crochet them as you go along. I'm guessing that area was just a single crochet background. You would have to change colors but I bet it would be quicker and sturdier. That was what my MIL would do when she did graphghans.

I think whatever or however way you did your afghan it turned out absolutely beautiful!! That's the way crocheting is...you can create a blanket whatever you like to do it and it becomes your creation.
