Crochet horses

I a looking for an easy way to make manes for crocheted horses. Any ideas?

Maybe a crochet loop stitch with a really long loop, cut the loops, and un-ply the yarn ends?  Tutorial below - pay close attention to the motion of the hook shown, it's not intuitive and it locks the the loop  so it won't come undone.
