Can anyone identify this stitch?

I am trying to identify this stitch.  I've checked my crochet stitch books, but no luck.  My 96 year old mother has a friend with a large, old blanket with this stitch and would like me to make her a small lap blanket.  Any assistance would be appreciated.  Thanks, Jeanie
